Feb., 1707, <strong>the</strong> third son of William <strong>Hyde</strong> (6) and Anne<br />

Bushucll, w<strong>as</strong> a grandson of Samuel Ilyde (2) <strong>the</strong> first,<br />

and Jane Lee, of I^<strong>or</strong>wich. He m. 12 E'ov., 1730, his<br />

second cous<strong>in</strong>, Anne Tracy, b. 29 Nov., 1708, at E'<strong>or</strong>wich,<br />

<strong>the</strong> second daughter of John Tracy <strong>the</strong> second, and Elizabeth<br />

Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong>, of jS'<strong>or</strong>wich {see No. 38, and Appeyidix, B).<br />

His first cous<strong>in</strong>, Elijah <strong>Hyde</strong> (24), at <strong>the</strong> same time m. her<br />

sister, Ruth Tracy.<br />

[Tliis Elizabeth Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong>, wife of John Tracy <strong>the</strong><br />

second of IST<strong>or</strong>wich, w<strong>as</strong> a daughter of Thom<strong>as</strong> Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> second of ]Sr<strong>or</strong>wich, who w<strong>as</strong> b. 27 August, 1649, <strong>the</strong><br />

eldest son of Lieut. Thom<strong>as</strong> Lefl<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong>, one of <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

^propriet<strong>or</strong>s of N<strong>or</strong>wich, b. at Croxhall <strong>in</strong> England,<br />

who w<strong>as</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> first settlers of Saybrook. This Lieut.<br />

Thom<strong>as</strong> Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong> <strong>the</strong> first of N<strong>or</strong>wich is <strong>the</strong> person<br />

described by Miss Fanny M. Calk<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> her hist<strong>or</strong>y of<br />

N<strong>or</strong>wich, <strong>as</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> first Thom<strong>as</strong><br />

Tracy of N<strong>or</strong>wich, and Thom<strong>as</strong> M<strong>in</strong>er, relieved Unc<strong>as</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> sachem of <strong>the</strong> Mohegans with provisions, when he<br />

w<strong>as</strong> besieged by <strong>the</strong> Narragansetts <strong>in</strong> his f<strong>or</strong>t on Shattock<br />

Po<strong>in</strong>t; and which probably led to <strong>the</strong> subsequent grant<br />

by Unc<strong>as</strong> and his sons of n<strong>in</strong>e miles square of lands, to<br />

Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong> and his <strong>as</strong>cociates, <strong>in</strong> 1659, f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

township of N<strong>or</strong>wich. His son, Thom<strong>as</strong> Letf<strong>in</strong>g<strong>well</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

second, came with him to N<strong>or</strong>wich <strong>in</strong> 1660, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>n<br />

about eleven years of age. He m. Mary Bushnell, b. <strong>in</strong><br />

Jan., 1655, at Saybrook (<strong>the</strong> eldest daughter of Richard<br />

Bushnell and Mary Marv<strong>in</strong> of Saybrook), sister of Richard<br />

Bushnell <strong>the</strong> first of N<strong>or</strong>wich, and granddaughter of <strong>the</strong><br />

first Mattliew Marv<strong>in</strong> of Hartf<strong>or</strong>d. ^See No. 6."]<br />

Richard <strong>Hyde</strong> settled at N<strong>or</strong>wich, and resided on Bean<br />

Hill, and succeeded his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>as</strong> a justice of <strong>the</strong> peace of<br />

N<strong>or</strong>wich. He w<strong>as</strong> a very <strong>in</strong>telligent and <strong>in</strong>fluential man,<br />

and w<strong>as</strong> f<strong>or</strong> many years one of <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g men of <strong>the</strong><br />

town. His wife cl. 20 April, 1762. He survived her, and<br />

d. 22 Dec, 1785, and w<strong>as</strong> buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old part of <strong>the</strong><br />

cemetery near <strong>the</strong> church at <strong>the</strong> town of N<strong>or</strong>wich. He<br />

w<strong>as</strong> a lawyer.
