IV. Lydia Hyde (30), borii at Lebanon, Conn., abont
1710, the third daughter of Samuel Hyde (4) and Elizabeth
Calkins, was a granddaughter of Samuel H^^de (2) the
iirst, and Jane Lee, of Norwich. She m. 2 ITov., 1727,
Jonathan Metcalf, b. 17 Jan., 1702, at Lebanon, the eldest
son of Jonathan Metcalf and Hannah Avery of Lebanon.
[This Jonathan Metcalf the Iirst of Lebanon, b. 16
March, 1675, who married Hannah Avery in Jan., 1703,
was the eldest son of Jonathan Metcalf the first of Dedham,
Mass., and his wife, Hannah Keurick. That Jonathan
Metcalf, the first of Dedham, was the second son of
Michael Metcalf 2d, of Dedham, and Mary Fairbanks,
second son of Michael Metcalf of Korwich in England.
That Michael Metcalf was born at Tatterford, in the county
of I^orfolk, England, in 1586 ; and his first wife, Sarah,
was b. 17 June, 1593, in the adjoining parish of llTorth
Eainham. They were m. 13 Oct., 1616, and settled in the
city of Norwich, and had eleven children, two of whom
died in their infancy in England. Being persecuted by
Bishop Wren on account of his religion, he emigrated
with his wife and nine children to this country in April,
1637, and settled at Dedham in July of the same year.
His wife d. 30 Nov., 1644, at Dedham. His children by
her, who came to this country, were : 1. Mary, who m.
Henry Wilson. 2. Michael, who m. Mary Fairbanks. 3.
John, who m. Mary Chickering. 4. Sarah, who m. Eobert
Onion. 5. Elizabeth, who m. Thomas Bancroft of Reading.
6. Martha, who m. three times. 7. Thomas, who m.
l,"Sarah Paige; and 2, Anne Paine. 8. Jane, who m.
Thomas Walker of Rchoboth. And 9. Rebecca, who m.
John Mcintosh of Dedham. Michael Metcalf, for his
second wife, m. 13 Aug., 1645, the widow Mary Pidge of
Roxbury, and had by her no issue. His son Michael Metcalf
and Mary Fairbanks had five children : 1. Michael,
who m. Elizabeth Kingsbury. 2. Mary, who m. John
"Ware. 3. Sarah, who m. Robert Ware of Wrentham.
4. Jonathan, b. 21 Sept., 1650, who m. 10 April, 1674,
Hannah Kenrick, and d. 27 May, 1727. And 5. Eleazcr,
who m. and settled at Wrentham. Most of the Metcalfs
in the northern part of United States are the descendants
of this Michael Metcalf, who. came from Norwich in Eno;-
