8.2. Undergraduate Studies Committee
8.2.1. Purpose
The Undergraduate Studies Committee shall deal with matters involving curriculum
development; ABET preparation and visits; assessment and improvement processes; and
individual student issues that are of an unusual nature. Other matters of wide concern about the
undergraduate program shall also go before this committee.
Major curriculum changes shall be approved by the Members. Actions taken by this Committee
shall be communicated to the Faculty and may be repealed by that body.
8.2.2. Composition
The Undergraduate Studies Committee shall consist of four Members, two each from the
Aerospace and the Mechanical Engineering programs, the undergraduate advisor, and two
undergraduate students. The students shall elect their representatives according to procedures of
their own choice. The term of office shall be one year for students and two years for Members
with two Members appointed each year. Reappointment is permitted for Members, and
reelection for a maximum of one additional term is permitted for students. (The Department’s
representative on the College of Engineering and Mines Undergraduate Studies Committee shall
be an ex-officio member of the Department Undergraduate Studies Committee provided that the
person is not presently serving on the Department Undergraduate Studies Committee.)
8.2.3. Minutes
The members of the Committee shall designate a Committee member to take minutes of each
meeting. The Head shall be responsible for maintaining a file of transcribed minutes for
inspection by the Faculty. Copies of resolutions and other actions that affect changes in general
policy shall be distributed by the Head to all Faculty, and kept in a Departmental file for
inspection by the same.
8.3. Graduate Studies and Research Committee
8.3.1. Purpose
The Graduate Studies and Research Committee shall deal with matters relevant to research and
graduate curriculum development, admissions, and recruitment; the establishment of criteria for
graduate student admission and the awarding of financial aid; selection of TAs and their course
assignments; the review and development of policies; the publication of handbooks for students;
and the administration of the Ph.D. qualifying examinations. The Committee shall also strive to
strengthen current research capabilities and to develop new capabilities and directions in research;
promote communication between researchers in and out of the College; suggest unified programs
with emphasis in various specialty areas; handle individual student issues in response to petitions;
and be responsible for all other issues impacting the graduate and research programs delegated by
the Faculty to this Committee.
Major policy changes shall be approved by the Members. The Committee shall be authorized to
make minor changes in policy and communicate its decisions to the Faculty at regular intervals.
