“Launching Your Engineering Career” A survey regarding the quality of academic advising in the College of Engineering was designed to identify which attributes of academic advising were important to students and how well they felt their needs were being met. The results identified where the College should focus improvement efforts to better serve the needs of engineering students. Survey data identified the following priorities for improvement: 1. Assistance with career and/or educational planning 2. Providing advice about career experience opportunities 3. Providing advice about permanent career employment In response to this identified student need the College hired a career development specialist who provides direct liaison with the University Career Services office and offers the following services specifically oriented for engineering students: • workshops (resume writing, job search skills, cover letter writing, interviewing skills). • careersEngr list serve (provides announcements concerning internships, co-ops, full and part-time positions, workshops, Career Services information, presentations, web site information, etc.) – About 1600 engineering students subscribe. • resume checks and critiques (over 350 resumes during 2003-04). • assistance for students interested in the Global Engineering Educational Exchange Program. • resume referrals to employers. The support services offered to engineering students have been formalized into the “Launching Your Engineering Career” program that is administered in accordance with the following flow chart: Freshmen Transfer students Education/Career Plan & Career Connection Job search Department invitation ENGR 102 Sophomore Course Career experience: co-op, research proj., part-time, summer Career experience yes ? no Register with Career Services Career Launch Refresher/update Launch Your Engineering Career Job search Department career experience seminar Department exit interview Professional society Career position Attachments - Page 30 Aerospace Engineering $30 ? yes Sophomore Course The actual content of the two-hour “Launching Your Engineering Career” program is: • resume writing (how to create a resume; resume format; resume content; and the scannable resume. Students write a resume and submit it for a critique)
• finding a career experience (job search skills and strategies; using Career Services; how to find an internship, co-op, research internship with faculty, part-time or full-time job; and self-directed job search) • interviewing skills (do’s and don’ts; researching company information; questions you’ll be asked; questions you should ask; group vs. one-on-one interviews; and information interviews. Students conduct a mock informational interview) • cover and thank you letters (anatomy of a cover and thank you letter; responding to advertised positions; and helpful examples) Aerospace Engineering Attachments - Page 31
