Partnering to Recruit a Better Engineering Freshman Class While focus is on its own college-wide recruitment activities, the College partners with the Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP), the Math, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program, the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, and the UA admissions office to assure a diverse and excellent student body. The activities of this partnership are outlined in the following flowchart. Through visits to elementary, junior high and high schools Engineering Ambassadors, faculty and staff educate young people on the many opportunities in engineering. Engineering Ambassadors are students who volunteer their time to educate middle and high school students on the diversity of engineering careers and enhance student recruitment to the College of Engineering. They represent all majors in the College and share information about the university and college experience from a student’s perspective. Specific recruitment activities include: National Merit and Flinn Scholars’ receptions Senior day – All admitted engineering students are invited to campus Mailings to students requesting information from our outreach materials Mailings to National Merit semifinalists High school visits as requested Multicultural Engineering Program Activities • Proyecto Access - NASA sponsored program for economically disadvantaged middle school students. • Summer Engineering Academy (SEA) - Pre-college engineering program, recruits minority students through MESA program counselors. • Members of SHPE, NSBE, SWE and AISES visit local schools and present MEP programs and invite students to campus events. These ambassadors stay in touch with middle and high school students by e-mail and phone calls and they invite the students to Engineering sponsored campus activities. UA Admissions Office sponsored Activities • Junior Day – Top 5% of high school seniors are invited to campus. • Minority Senior Day – Top 25% of high school seniors are invited to campus. • Presidential scholars’ receptions • UA101 • Phoenix Wildcat exploration Women In Science and Engineering Sponsored Activities • Futurebound - NSF funded program for women students attending Pima Community College. WISE and the engineering college’s Virtual Development Center work together to recruit these women into engineering. MESA Sponsored Activities • Counselors in high-percentage minority high schools provide engineering projects and experiences along with encouragement to prepare academically for engineering careers. • Annual MESA Day events on campus, track students from middle school to graduation, prepare students to be college bound, train teachers and counselors. Sponsor engineering design competitions. 40 engineers from Raytheon participate in various activities. Admission requirements (Refer to Appendix II - Institutional Profile) Students entering the College of Engineering must meet the following qualifications: Required high school competency courses: • English: 4 units (composition, literature) • Mathematics: 4 units (algebra, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry) • Laboratory science: 3 units (biology, chemistry, physics) • Social science: 2 units (American history, other social science) • Fine arts: 1 unit (art, dance, music, or drama) Arizona residents: To be eligible for unconditional admission, Arizona residents must meet one of the following qualifications: • Top 25% class rank • 3.0 unweighted GPA in the 16 required courses (on a 4.0 scale) • 1040 SAT score • 22 composite ACT score. Students may be admitted conditionally if they have: • no more than one deficiency in any two subjects listed in course work requirements and • top 50% class rank or • 2.5 minimum unweighted GPA in the 16 required courses Out-Of-State Residents: Admission for out-of-state students is competitive. Good grades, high test scores and a strong curriculum increase a candidate’s chance of acceptance. However, they will not be considered without: • test scores ( sat or act ) • 3.0 unweighted GPA in the 16 required courses (on a 4.0 scale) • a complete application • required course work (see below) Aerospace Engineering Attachments - Page 3
