He was ordained over <strong>the</strong> 3d church in Reading in 1770, and<br />

died 7 May, 1782, aged 39. His wife died 10 June, 1776, aged<br />

21. <strong>The</strong> following is an extract from <strong>the</strong> inscription on his<br />

tomb-stone, at Reading, written by <strong>the</strong> Rev. Dr. Cummings <strong>of</strong><br />

Billerica : "A genius, unfettered by bigotry, improved by study,<br />

ennobled by religion and by an evangelical temper, and enlarged by<br />

<strong>the</strong> most diffusive benevolence, has taken its flight to its native<br />

country." Rev. ELIAS H. died <strong>of</strong> consumption, in 1754.<br />

JOS1AH HAVEN3 , bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above, settled in Hopkinton;<br />

he married ESTHER STREETER 28 Feb. 1744; by<br />

whom he had ASA, SILAS, JAMES, and MARY. He became deranged,<br />

and his fa<strong>the</strong>r was appointed his guardian. His children<br />

were all minors when he died.<br />

MARTHA HAVENs, sister <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above, married GEORGE<br />

CARYL <strong>of</strong> Hop. 17 Feb. 1738. <strong>The</strong>y had MARTHA, 12 Nov. 1740,<br />

and probably Lois, who married ALEX. WHITNEY <strong>of</strong> Westborough,<br />

in July, 1776. SHE joined <strong>the</strong> church 30 July, 1738. My fa-<br />

<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ten spoke <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> his "Aunt Caryl " to him,<br />

after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his parents.<br />

LOIS HAVEN3 , sister <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above, married MOSES ADAMS<br />

<strong>of</strong> Holliston in Nov. 1744. <strong>The</strong>ir only child was MOSES, born<br />

16 Oct. 1749, N. S. <strong>The</strong>y settled in Fram., and lived in <strong>the</strong><br />

house, afterwards owned by John Fisk, Esq.<br />

Her husband died<br />

23 July, 1756, aged 35 ; she <strong>the</strong>n returned to Hop., rejoined <strong>the</strong><br />

church <strong>the</strong>re, had her son baptised, and died <strong>the</strong> same year, aged<br />

32. HE was <strong>the</strong> Rev. MOSES ADAMS <strong>of</strong> Acton (Har. Univ. 1771);<br />

was ordained 25 June 1777, and continued to preach till a few<br />

months before his death, 13 Oct. 1819. He was buried on <strong>the</strong><br />

16th, which was <strong>the</strong> seventieth return <strong>of</strong> his birth day. HE<br />

married ABIGAIL STONE, daughter <strong>of</strong> Hon. Josiah Stone <strong>of</strong> Fram.,<br />

by whom he had seven children. (See p. 29.)<br />

<strong>The</strong> reader will excuse <strong>the</strong> feelings which induce <strong>the</strong> insertion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following extract from <strong>the</strong> inscription placed over his<br />

grave :<br />

In his person, he was dignified and modest in his ;<br />

intellect,<br />

vigorous and sound ; in his heart, benevolent and devout. His<br />

preaching was plain and practical, and his example added greatly<br />

to its power. <strong>The</strong> scriptures were his study and delight ; and,<br />

while he exercised <strong>the</strong> Protestant right <strong>of</strong> expounding <strong>the</strong>m for<br />

himself, his candor toward <strong>the</strong> sincere, who differed from him,<br />

was in <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel. <strong>The</strong> good Being, whom he loved<br />

with supreme devotion, was pleased to grant him many years<br />

<strong>of</strong> prosperity and gladness, and to add not a few <strong>of</strong> affliction and<br />

sorrow. <strong>The</strong> first, he enjoyed with moderation and gratitude ;
