JABE WILSON DILLON<br />

WILLIS-Jabe Wilson Dillon, 77, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2000. He was<br />

a member of Grover K<strong>in</strong>g Post #1115 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hillsville, VA.<br />

Survived by: one son and daughter-<strong>in</strong>-law, Gary and Sandra Dillon, Willis; one<br />

granddaughter, Kristen Dillon, Floyd; four bro<strong>the</strong>rs, Harman Dillon, Greensboro,<br />

NC, Persh<strong>in</strong>g Dillion, Hartwood, VA, Clyde Dillon, Mart<strong>in</strong>sville, Alton Dillon,<br />

Newcastle; one sister, Treva Harman, Floyd; several nieces and nephews. Funeral<br />

service was Wednesday, February 16, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Gardner Funeral<br />

Home with Rev. Ralph Duncan officiat<strong>in</strong>g. Interment followed <strong>in</strong> Lee Cemetery,<br />

Tuggles Gap.<br />

DENNETTE AKERS DILLON<br />

FLOYD-Denette Akers Dillon passed away Thursday, February 10, 2000 <strong>in</strong> a<br />

Roanoke hospital. She moved to Floyd from Galax <strong>in</strong> 1944 and taught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Floyd<br />

County grade schools for 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> education at Radford University <strong>in</strong> 1953, and cont<strong>in</strong>ued teach<strong>in</strong>g until June,<br />

1973. Shortly <strong>the</strong>reafter, she and her husband, Richard retired to Florida and still<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>in</strong> Floyd. She was an avid and talented artist, many of her<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs grace <strong>the</strong> walls of Skyl<strong>in</strong>e Manor Nurs<strong>in</strong>g Home, where she was a<br />

resident. Surviv<strong>in</strong>g are: her husband, Richard G. Dillon, Floyd; two sons, Joseph<br />

Dillon, Floyd, and Max Dillon, Radford; five grandchildren, Dawn Gale Dillon, Mary<br />

Ela<strong>in</strong>e Weaver, Carolyn Jackson, Jo Ellen Brock, Curtis Richard Dillon; six sisters<br />

and one bro<strong>the</strong>r. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Arrangements<br />

by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.<br />

HASKER ELVIN DUNCAN<br />

FLOYD-Hasker Elv<strong>in</strong> Duncan, 81, passed away Friday, February 11, 2000 at New<br />

River Valley Medical Center. He was preceded <strong>in</strong> death by his wife, Laura Cox<br />

Duncan and a great grandson, Ryan Wallace. He is survived by: two sons, Hasker<br />

Kurbie Duncan, Floyd, Elv<strong>in</strong> Junior Duncan, Roanoke; one daughter and<br />

son-<strong>in</strong>-law, Ellewese and John Beamer Akers, R<strong>in</strong>er; grandchildren, Wanda<br />

Hodge, Wendell Duncan, Elvia Lucas, Harlan Akers, Anita Dell Akers, Lisa<br />

Williams, Monica Wallace, Sonia Hodges; 17 great-grandchildren; two bro<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

Roland Dean Duncan, Jasper Duncan, Floyd; three sisters, Esma Akers, Lorra<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Smith, Loretta Miller, Floyd. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday,<br />

February 13, 2000 at <strong>the</strong> Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Reverend<br />

Phillip Mart<strong>in</strong>, Reverend Eli Yoder and Mr. Loman Smith officiat<strong>in</strong>g. Burial followed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Duncan Cemetery.<br />

JAMES E. EPPERLY<br />

VINELAND, NJ-James E. Epperly, 95, died early Saturday morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

center at V<strong>in</strong>eland after be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> fail<strong>in</strong>g health. Mr. Epperly was born and raised <strong>in</strong><br />

Floyd, near Roanoke. He moved to NJ <strong>in</strong> 1927 and was a 40-year resident of<br />

Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon Co. before mov<strong>in</strong>g to V<strong>in</strong>eland <strong>in</strong> 1989. He was<br />

one of 12 children born to <strong>the</strong> late Peter F. and Osie Howery Epperly. He was<br />

pre-deceased by a son James P. <strong>in</strong> 1963 and a daughter Ka<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 1950. Mr.<br />
