© Green Cat Renewables Ltd GLENLORA WIND TURBINE Figure 1.1.6 – Control, Metering and Protection Building 1.2.10 Construction Programme The main construction period would last for approximately 3 to 5 months, from commencement of construction through reinstatement at the end of the construction period. Construction would consist of the following phases: Construction of site track for access to the turbine location including the excavation of cable trenches and the laying of electricity and communication cables. Construction of turbine foundations. The delivery and erection of turbine towers, nacelles and blades. Commissioning of the wind turbines. Site reinstatement. Measures to prevent contamination of the ground during the construction period would be implemented and continue throughout the life of the project. Including the following measures: Concrete: The foundation concrete specified would be of high strength structural grade which is not prone to leaching of alkalis. Page 22 of 173
© Green Cat Renewables Ltd GLENLORA WIND TURBINE Coolants: The transformers that will be used in the development are sealed units containing non‐toxic cooling oil. These units are similar to those used elsewhere in the UK and leakage is negligible. There will be no long term storage of lubricants or other petrochemical products on the site. 1.2.11 Construction Traffic Wind turbine components would be delivered to the site on articulated lorries. Extended trailers would be used to deliver the turbine blades which are up to 24m in length. Typically a 500 tonne and a 100 tonne mobile crane would be required for the erection of the turbine. A typical 500 tonne crane would have a travelling weight of 120 tonnes on ten axles with a maximum axle load of 12 tonnes and would have steering on all axles to help navigate bends. It is proposed that the road stone for the site tracks would come from a nearby quarry, using an internal road. This is anticipated to require approximately 60 lorry loads of aggregates in total. It is estimated that approximately 40 deliveries of concrete would be required together with 2 articulated trailer lorries carrying reinforcement steel for the foundation. Approximately 1 articulated low loader delivery for the turbine would be required to deliver the tower, the nacelle and the blades and a further lorry‐load would be required to transport the necessary cabling to the site. Further traffic movements would be required for the relevant personnel employed in the construction of the project, amounting to an average of some 6‐10 cars/vans per day at peak times. 1.2.12 Decommissioning At the end of the project’s operational life the wind turbine would be decommissioned, the principal elements removed, and the site restored leaving little if any visible trace. This is a process which is easily achievable within a short period of time, unlike many other forms of electricity generation. The wind turbine would be removed from the site and the foundations and site track not required for ongoing farming activities would be covered over with topsoil and reseeded. The cables would be de‐energised and left in place, with any cables marker signs removed. The electrical substation building would be removed and the building demolished to ground level with the foundation covered with topsoil and reseeded. The decommissioning process would take approximately two months to complete. A decommissioning programme would be agreed with the relevant authority prior to the commencement of decommissioning works. Page 23 of 173
