3.3 Ecology/Fauna 3.3.1 Introduction © Green Cat Renewables Ltd GLENLORA WIND TURBINE This section considers the potential effects of the proposed wind turbine on the nature conservation interests on and around the proposed site and sets out the scope of assessments carried out and the evaluation of significance that has been made based on these assessments. The general methodology of this ecological impact assessment pays explicit regard to the requirements of, and the advice given in the following documents: Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds (the “Birds Directive”); Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (the “Habitats Directive”); The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Amendment (Scotland) Regulations 2007 (the “Habitats Regulations”, which translates the Birds Directive and Habitats Directive into UK law); The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended; Nature Conservation (Scotland ) Act 2004; ‘National Planning Policy Guideline (NPPG) 14: Natural Heritage’, The Scottish Office, 1999; The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP); Inverclyde, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP); and Joint Nature Conservation Committee (1988) Handbook for Phase 1 habitat survey – a technique for environmental audit. JNCC, Peterborough. The impact of the proposed wind project on birds has been assessed with specific regard to the guidance provided in the following documents: Guidelines on Environmental Impacts of Wind Farms and Small Scale Hydro Electric Schemes, Scottish Natural Heritage, 2001; Survey methods for use in assessing the impacts of onshore windfarms on bird communities, Scottish Natural Heritage, November 2005; Windfarms and birds: Calculating a theoretical collision risk assuming no avoiding action, Scottish Natural Heritage, 2000; and Developing field and analytical methods to assess avian collision risk at wind farms, Band et al, in press. The ecological impact assessment has been carried out according to current guidance published by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (2006), which is recognised as best practice.
