2 BVCA Private Equity and Venture Capital Performance Measurement Survey 2011
Foreword
In the face of a subdued domestic recovery, prolonged weakness in the eurozone and uncertainty in
the global markets, UK private equity and venture capital continued to generate positive returns to
investors. The industry is in a strong position as we move forward.
The BVCA Private Equity and Venture Capital
Performance Measure Survey, produced by PwC
in association with Capital Dynamics, is the
most detailed and comprehensive study of its
type. Drawing on a direct survey of the BVCA’s
eligible members – around 96% of whom
responded this year – the survey contains
information on 501 UK-managed funds, and
we believe this makes it the most complete
country-specific survey on the performance of
private equity and venture capital in the world.
The ten-year annual internal rate of return
(IRR) for the funds in the survey remains high,
at 14.3%. This is marginally down on last year’s
figure (14.6%), but still far in excess of the
principal comparators such as UK pension
funds and the FTSE All-Share, which produced
returns over the same time period of 5.9%
and 4.8%, respectively.
This outperformance continues when we look at
five year returns, where UK private equity and
venture capital achieved an IRR of 8.0% against
returns for UK pension funds and the FTSE
All-Share of 3.5% and 1.2%, respectively.
The picture is less clear when we look at three
year returns, which are always subject to
considerable market volatility.
It should be noted, however, that private equity
and venture capital are long-term illiquid asset
classes, and as such, the since-inception IRR is
the most appropriate metric to use when looking
at their performance. Here, we see a relatively
high level of consistency amongst private equity
and venture capital returns around the fifteen
per cent mark, with a low of 13% in 2004 and
a high of 17.3% in 2007. This year’s since
inception IRR of 14.3% is well within this band,
and points to continuing strength for the
industry in the future.
As with last year, the returns of venture capital
are again worth commenting on, and we have
seen a rise in the since inception return for
post-2002 vintage funds to 4.0%, up from last
year’s figure of 2.2%. This is the highest since-
inception return yet for these funds, and the
second year in a row that their since-inception
performance has risen. The investment of
venture capital funds into small and growing
companies will be vital in digging the UK
economy out of its depression, and these
encouraging returns will doubtless help
attract more investors into the asset class.
This year’s survey points to a strong overall
performance by the industry, and is yet further
evidence that private equity and venture capital
are able to produce attractive and sustainable
returns over the longer term – and are a vital
part of an investor’s portfolio.
