Texas wheelchair bowler accomplishes rare feat
Shawn Beam shoots first 300
ARLINGTON— Though
confined to a wheelchair,
Shawn Beam took up the sport
of bowling nearly 22 years ago,
seeing it as a great opportunity
to spend competitive time with
his friends. Last week, the
Burleson, Texas, resident’s hard
work and dedication to the
sport led to the accomplishment
of a lifetime.
Beam, 36, put together 12
consecutive strikes for a 300
game in his TGIF league at
Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth
on May 18. The American
Wheelchair Bowling Association
(AWBA) reports Beam is
the first freehand wheelchair
bowler to shoot a certified
perfect game. The United States
Bowling Congress, the sport’s
national governing body, has
certified the score as official.
For Beam, who suffered
from a pinched nerve in his
spine at birth and has always
required the use of a wheelchair,
the perfect game was a
realization of a dream he has
had since he started bowling
competitively as a teenager.
Bowling for Beep
Baseball charity event
By Genie Franklin, Publisher
Sunday, June 3, Plano Super
Bowl is hosting the Inaugural
Bowling for Beep Baseball
charity event from 2pm-4pm
and all bowlers are welcome to
participate.
An international sport that
began in the United States
in 1975, Beep baseball is an
adaptive version of baseball for
the blind and visually impaired.
The softball-size ball is
equipped with an internal beep
so the batter can hear the ball
being pitched and the defensive
players can locate the ball once
it has been hit to the outfield.
The infield is comprised of a
home plate, a buzzing first
base and buzzing third base to
help the runner locate the 48”
tall base pad.
Lone Star Roadrunners’
coach, Sam McKenzie, started
the Dallas co-ed team three
years ago and the team is
comprised of adults ranging in
age from 20 to 60. There are
four beep baseball teams in
Texas and 28 teams nationally.
The Dallas/Fort Worth Lone
Star Roadrunners Beep baseball
team is trying to raise money
to participate in the regional
tournament in Wichita, KS and
the Beep Baseball World Series
this summer in Ames, IA. “We
have 17 players on the team as
well as 17 guide dogs, so travel
expenses to the tournaments
start to add up. We are hoping
to raise at least $7,500 so we
can cover some of the cost of
travel,” said McKenzie.
The charity event doesn’t
have a cost to bowl, but the
Roadrunners are asking for a
minimal donation of $50 per
person. Any amount greater
than $50 will go directly to
help with the travel expenses.
Local businesses or corporate
sponsors are welcome as well.
Any business that sponsors
a lane for $500 will receive
a team hat and will have the
opportunity to hang their
company’s banner. If a business
sponsors a lane for $1,250
they will receive a team signed
can compete on the same
playing field as everyone else,
and that has always been the
Random Thoughts
It’s been a very busy week
for Shawn Beam of Burleson,
TX.
On Friday he was interviewed
by Fox 4 News, which
was his sixth interview of the
week. If you are wondering
why he’s getting so much
attention, then you must have
been living under a rock, or in
a foreign country for the last
two weeks.
Beam, 36, bowled the
first freehand wheelchair
sanctioned 300 game, ever. I
have to admit I’m surprised it’s
never been done before, but
very happy that it was done by
our local star Shawn. He shot
the milestone game in the TGIF
league at Cityview Lanes on
May 18th.
Since that moment it has
been a whirlwind of activity
and attention for him. He did
a video interview with USBC,
that’s up on their website at
BOWL.com. It shows a few
shots of Shawn throwing the
big draw for me,” said Beam,
a mailroom supervisor for
American Airlines who maintains
a 190 league average.
“I’ve never let my chair keep
me from doing what I want to
do. Wheelchair basketball guys
will never be in the NBA, but
you can compete with anyone
in bowling.”
The AWBA has been working
to raise awareness of its
organization and hopes Beam’s
accomplishment will spread
the word about wheelchair
bowling.
“For the AWBA, it brings to
its members a sense of pride in
what we do and how
we do it,” AWBA Chairperson
Joe Fox Sr. said.
“It has already opened the
eyes of many to the sport of
wheelchair bowling. We will
continue to teach those in
chairs the sport of wheelchair
bowling, continue to build our
organization around ability not
disability, and continue to work
with those that govern the
sport at USBC to plant seeds
ball so you can see for yourself
just how good he is. As for
doing the interview, he loved
it, “It was something else. I had
watched the one they did with
Al Uttecht on-line but I never
thought I would be in that position,
it was surreal. I had never
We had a good time in
Houston for the TCBA Playoff
tournament, and although we
didn’t pull off the re-peat for a
win this year, we were pretty
satisfied to make the finals
and end up in a tie for 2nd
place. I’m not gonna lie, we
were definitely hoping for just
one more pin, but a tie is way
better than 3rd place. The full
results will be in next week,
so I won’t get into much more
detail on the results.
It’s a pretty stressful
weekend to make it through 17
games without someone getting
upset. We have seven ladies
on our roster, and bowlers can
switch out every game. It’s a
tough decision to try to figure
out who should bowl each
game, especially when everyone
is capable of putting up
some good scores. Do you go
with the highest averages and
try to overcome the handicap
with strikes, or do you put in
some lower averages so your
team gets a little handicap to
even it out?
We had the National TCBA
Bowler of the Year and highest
average, Mrs. Genie Franklin,
on our team and she took her
turn on the bench just like every
other bowler on the team.
There were a couple of teams
I know who had a bowler or
bowlers walk out on their
teams because they didn’t like
a decision. Luckily my team
helped me make the difficult
decisions and realized there
is no I in TEAM, you have to
do what you think is best to
get the team into a position to
win. Do I regret some? Maybe
a little since it came down to
a pin for 2nd, but I don’t think
there was anything more we
could have done to get back
on top. We will try again next
year!
After bowling all last
weekend, I was glad Monday
was just the league payoff and I
didn’t have to put my hand into
a bowling ball. It was also announced
at the league meeting
that after 26 years of being the
secretary of the Classic High
Pot League which she started,
Arrelene Lorenzo has decided
it is time to resign her position.
She and Jack will continue to
secretary the Thursday night
league at Westcreek for as
long as they can, but decided
it was time to give one up.
I’m honored that Arrelene and
the league have entrusted me
with the league and position of
secretary for next fall. I know
it will be a lot of work to fill
her shoes and keep the league
going strong, but I’m looking
forward to the challenge.
FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM 1956-2009
Then Wednesday, while
I was playing softball, I got
tangled up with another
fielder running backwards for a
pop-up fly. I know, since little
league we’ve been taught to
“call the ball” for a reason, but
I didn’t think anyone else was
even close to me. Needless to
say, I hit the ground, and hard!
I landed flat on my back and
the back of my head without
catching myself or breaking
my fall with my hands or
anything. When I opened my
eyes I saw the birds flying
around my head like they do in
the cartoons. All of my limbs
were numb and tingling. I
was dizzy, but after a couple
of minutes everything seemed
to be fine. The next morning,
I woke up and could barely
move my neck. I must have
gotten some whiplash. Now,
four days later it still hurts just
to hold my head up. When am
I going to learn? I am getting to
old for softball!
It was a long week for me,
so I didn’t make any plans for
the weekend. I hope everyone
had a great Memorial Day
weekend, and took the time
to be thankful for all of those
who serve or have lost their
lives fighting for our country.
The holiday weekend is always
a good time to get together
with family and friends and
cookout or go to the lake and
get ready for the summer.
Seems like every year there are
accidents or drownings at the
lake on the holidays, so hopefully
everyone was safe. Kids
are getting out of school, fall
leagues are over and its time
to relax and enjoy the weather
before it gets too hot.
the sport “got into his blood”
and he never looked back.
Over the past few years,
Beam has become more serious
about his abilities as a wheelchair
bowler. He joined the
AWBA and began competing in
the organization’s tournaments.
He will compete in the AWBA
National Championships next
month in Milwaukee.
But the most important
thing Beam wants people to
take from his accomplishment
is that bowling is a sport for
anyone confined to a wheelchair,
not just those who want
to be the best.
“The best thing about
wheelchair bowling is you have
that sense of camaraderie you
have in sports,” Beam said.
“You don’t have to be good, because
anyone can bowl and it’s
fun for anyone no matter what
your average is. But people
can’t get discouraged because
I’m a testament to how you can
start with a low average and
make it to the top with hard
work and perseverance.”
Even with all the hard work
Beam has put into the sport, he
never imagined he would be
celebrating a perfect game.
“Bowling a 300 game was
something I never thought was
possible, and I can’t explain
what it feels like,” Beam said.
“I threw the last ball and I
knew I had hit my mark and
everything was right. When it
struck, I was overwhelmed. If I
could have fallen to my knees,
I would have.”
The American Wheelchair
Bowling Association, which
certifies its competition with
the United States Bowling
Congress, has more than 500
members and conducts an
average of 10 tournaments each
year. For more information on
TEXAS STATE USBC
Bowling Round Up and
Annual Meeting Wrap Up
Houston, TX, May 19, 2012:
Delegates descended upon the
Houston Hobby Hilton May 18
and 19 for the Texas Bowling
Roundup and TSUSBC Annual
Meeting.
Outfitted in a variety of costumes
one might expect to find
in a circus carnival for the Delegate’s
party on Friday night,
Texas State USBC (TSUSBC)
Board members dressed as
clowns of all varieties, with
one very pompous (and self
proclaimed handsome) fortuneteller,
known as ZaTenPin on
hand to host games of skill and
entertain delegates from across
the state.
Texas bowlers again demonstrated
their support for our
charities offering donations to
the BVL (Veterans) by guessing
the number of marbles in the
jar. Suzie Wolleck of Killeen
was right on with her pick of
522. She won 50% of the pot
for $158. Pink cotton candy
was offered for donations
to Bowl for the Cure raising
$100. A vintage Shrine Circus
poster benefitting High School
Bowling was auctioned for $60
with an additional $72 ($132
total) raised for selling pictures
with a bowling pin cutout, and,
TSUSBC 3rd VP Larry Stroud
auctioned his rubber chicken
with proceeds of $200 being
donated to the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Fund. In addition,
Saturday’s Annual meeting.
Thank you everyone. Texas’
bowlers are the best!
It was an emotional weekend
for everyone, including
outgoing TSUSBC President Sue
Hunter. Since the merger six
years ago, Sue is the first and
only President of the association
to serve. Delegates and
Board members were treated to
a surprise luncheon Saturday
afternoon to celebrate her years
of service, not only to TSUSBC,
but for the TWBA as well. First
VP Tommy Miller (President
elect) and longtime friend
Sylvia Broyles (former TWBA
Secretary and WIBC President)
paid tributes. The Board is
honoring Sue by purchasing
a brick in her name at the
entrance to the International
Bowling Museum and Hall of
Fame in Arlington.
The Board also announced
bricks may be purchased in
tribute for any outgoing adult
officer or director based on
Board approval. With that in
mind, brick purchases were
authorized for Mary Antell- El
Paso (deceased), as well as for
Jimmy and Sharon Cline- Austin
(retired).
tatives Sharon Moen and Mike
Donahue gave a presentation
concerning USBC’s Mission
to “Create Lifetime Bowlers”.
Programs covered included the
Welcome2Bowling initiative
focusing primarily on new
members by offering a chance
to purchase a performance
bowling ball at a reduced price
and, the opportunity to take a
½-hour bowling lesson. These
benefits are geared at reducing
the number of new bowlers
that quit after their first year
due to not showing significant
improvement. Also covered was
a preview of membership options
and awards. A “Top Ten”
list of things for associations to
remember found “HAVE FUN!”
in the number one position.
In legislation, delegates
approved a proposal to amend
the TSUSBC bylaws concerning
delegate representation based
on membership numbers for
local associations. Previously,
non-merged associations were
allowed just a single delegate
regardless of size, whereas
now, all associations will be
treated equally regardless of
merged/ non-merged status.
Under the adopted amendment,
all associations will
receive two delegates for 1
-1,000 adult members and one
delegate per 1,000 members
thereafter. Youth delegates will
be calculated in the same manner.
For example, an association
with 2,001 members will
receive four delegates, 3,001
will get five, etc. Membership
numbers are based on the
ending count as of July 31 prior
to the annual meeting.
Recognized for annual
awards were Female Service
Award: Doris Chesser- Houston,
Male Bowler of the Year:
Chris Castro- Dallas and
Female Bowler of the Year:
Mention was made for
Mooresville Classic. But his
Senior U.S. Open victory, where
he defeated Walter Ray Williams
Jr. in the championship
match, 246-189, was really the
starting point of what became
a dream year. He went on to
win two more tournaments and
had only one tournament all
season where he finished lower
than fourth place, finishing
13th in Decatur, Ill.
This season, Mohr is getting
off to a more modest start with
finishes of fifth, 21st, 13th and
second, but he’s confident the
Senior U.S. Open can create the
needed spark for another run at
Senior Player of the Year honors.
“Heading into the U.S.
Open, the race is pretty wide
open,” said Mohr, who was also
the 2009 Senior Player of the
Year. “We’ve had four different
winners in four tournaments
and it’s as competitive as ever
with a lot of excellent players
becoming eligible for the Senior
Tour this season, so a win in
the U.S. Open can put me right
back in contention.”
Mohr is especially looking
forward to the U.S. Open
because he likes to bowl at Suncoast.
Prior to his win in 2011,
he finished second to Mark
Williams in the 2010 Senior U.S.
Open at the same center.
“I’m one of those players
who likes a longer format. I
think it favors me and I’ve kept
a winning attitude. I feel as well
prepared if not better than last
year,” said Mohr. “Bowling 50
games over the course of the
tournament is a lot and with a
format where pins carry over
after each round, there’s always
that little extra pressure to not
give pins away. It’s going to be
a more challenging condition
than we usually face, so making
your spares is always especially
important. Giving just 10 pins
away can be critical.”
As the season approaches
the halfway mark, the players
who have won in the first
four events this season are
Senior Tour “rookie” Lennie
Boresch Jr.; Walter Ray Williams
Jr.; rookie Bob Learn Jr.
and Johnny Petraglia. All four
titles were memorable for each
player.
Boresch won the Senior Sun
Bowl In the Villages in his
Senior Tour debut the same
week he was inducted into the
USBC Hall of Fame.
Williams won the Senior
Don Carter Memorial for
his third career Senior Tour
title the same week his father
passed away and after a PBA
Tour season in which he ended
his 26-season streak of making
a television finals appearance.
Learn won the Senior
Mooresville Classic in just his
third tournament competing on
the Senior Tour.
Petraglia made PBA history
when his win in the Senior
Dayton Classic made him the
first player to win a PBA Tour
or Senior Tour event in six
different decades. That win
was especially important for
Petraglia because he’s likely
to miss most of the rest, if not
all, of rest of the season due to
shoulder surgery.
Like its U.S. Open counterpart
on the PBA Tour, the
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
I’ve said it before and I’ll
say it again.
One of bowling’s greatest
assets, particularly in the youth
area is that everyone gets to
play in a fully meaningful way.
Talk shows devote hours to the
subject of how to come up with
ways to guarantee that every
youngster gets to play. There
are all kinds of special rules in
most sports aimed at making
the kids a bigger part of the
scene.
Lineups are extended,
minutes are assured, mandates
often alter general routines and
talent, will to win and excel
and such silly things as no
scoring, no winning and no
statistics are kept.
In sports and in life there
are winners and losers and
been filmed before so I was
definitely nervous,” he said.
Beam’s previous high game
was 289 back in February, and
high series was 696. He now
has some new highs!
Shawn is a 15-year veteran
of American Airlines, where
he is the supervisor for the
mail and receiving rooms at
the corporate headquarters. But
bowling has always been his
true passion, and something
his family has always done as
well. He started when he was
15 and hasn’t stopped since.
His brothers, Brett and Jonathon
are both heavily involved
in the game, and do have a
few more 300’s than Shawn,
but now that he has one on the
board more will most likely
follow. I would like to see him
chase down Jonathon, who had
seven 300’s this season at AMF
Showplace Euless, alone!
It is seldom that we have
“first’s” in bowling anymore,
and I often complain about
that, which is why I’m so
excited about this one. I’m
wondering if it’s going to
change Shawn’s life a little,
and it seems like it already
has. “Honestly I didn’t think
it would at first but with the
amount of attention I’ve gotten
it has really blown up. The
AWBA (American Wheelchair
Bowling Association) has asked
to do some promotional events.
I’ve been a member for the
last 3 years, so it’s something
I definitely want to do,” he
added. “They are a really important
organization, and dear
to my heart, so any recognition
they get out of it is great with
me.” You can find out more
about AWBA by going to their
website at www.AWBA.org.
For Shawn, congratulations
on bringing some TRUE excitement
to the sport of bowling.
win or lose there always is
learning.
Many sports have wisely
invested time and money to
develop interest in their sports,
not to create future stars but
to create players, coaches,
officials and fans.
Bowling must keep its
accent on the many junior programs
and school activities that
range from pre-school through
post college. Bowling can be
expensive for youngsters and
their families and they should
not be viewed as merely a possible
source of current income,
but the life blood of the sport
pumping new life forever and
ever.
Every organization in
bowling must fully recognize
the fact of bowling life that
bowling’s plus with youth is
that everyone gets to play, not
in a forced way, but in a full
participant and competitive
status.
Leagues can have two, three
or more on a team, and there
is always room for one more
on some team, and they all get
to play and get to know how
they do as team members and
individuals.
Boys learn early that girls
can bowl well and aren’t just
mere girls but valuable teammates
and opponents. Boys and
girls get to know each other
better in various competitive as
well as social situations.
Parents almost dread going
to a sporting contest when
their children are border line
players, good enough to play,
but not good enough to always
play. Parents of organized
young league bowlers know
their youngsters will be in action,
no matter how well they
shoot, and that the kids will
be in a classified situation that
is either competitive or will be
by a handicap procedure that
makes for some semblance
of equality based on current
ability.
Bowling is fortunate that it
is a sport that can handle differences
in age, size or ability
in one of the fairest ways of
any sport. But bowling should
be shouting from the rooftops
to youngsters and parents and
Armstrong Middle School,
Plano, TX was recently named
district champions of the first
organized middle school bowling
program in Texas.
Armstrong 1 was 10-1 in
district play and had a team
average of 146.
In conjunction with district
play, the Texas Middle School
Bowling City Championship
was held Saturday, May 5th
with all eleven district teams
competing. Armstrong 1 led
the field in qualifying and
went undefeated in the first
two rounds of match play. In
the final match, Armstrong 1
defeated Haggard 1 172-145,
175-146 in the best 2 of 3 baker
format to win the City Championship
title.
the program to reach out to
The dream started last fall
when Benavides spoke to John
thought he could bring the
and then started marketing
the idea to parents and high
initial goal was to have around
The program kicked off in
When Benavides got the
program going, he didn’t
realize the hard work that lay
he didn’t have eleven coaches
PBA Announces 2011-12
Regional Tour Awards
SEATTLE — Josh Blanchard
made it three PBA Rookie of
the Year honors for the 2011-12
season adding West and Northwest
Region awards Thursday
after being named PBA Tour
Rookie of the Year last week.
Blanchard’s awards were part
of the PBA’s announcement
of regular and senior regional
awards for the 2011-12 season.
Blanchard, of Gilbert, Ariz.,
had one win in each region
while cashing and making
match play in all five events he
entered.
“For me, it’s probably the
best place to get ready for Tour
events,” Blanchard said of
bowling regionals. “You’re able
to experience a variety of tough
patterns and that experience
helps makes it easier to get
matched up with the conditions
on tour.
“As a non-member, I just
bowled the one or two I was
able to bowl, but as a member,
now I’m incorporating more
Chris Hibbitts II Wins PBA SW
Region Fort Sill Bowl Viper Open
Fort Sill, OK, (May 21, 2012)
— Chris Hibbitts II from Fort
Worth, Texas, defeated Nathan
Bohr of Wichita, Kan., 198-194,
to win his first Professional
Bowlers Association Southwest
Region title Sunday in the third
annual Fort Sill Viper Open at
Twin Oaks Bowling Center.
Hibbitts, generally regarded
as the best bowler without
a championship in the PBA
Southwest Region, claimed
his first title in his 102nd PBA
event. He threw four strikes
to finish his game and then
waited to see if Bohr could
throw two strikes to deny him
his victory. Bohr struck on his
first attempt, but left a 10 pin
on his second shot, allowing
Hibbitts to claim the title in
the first of the PBA Southwest
Region’s four “animal pattern”
championship tournaments.
Hibbitts started his road
to victory by eliminating Jay
Futrell of Derby. Kan., in his
best-of-five-game Round of 16
match, 3-1. After eliminating
amateur Bill Oakes of Lawton,
Okla., in the best-of-three
Round of 8, 2-0, Hibbitts
defeated Joe Findling from
Mesquite, Texas, 237-210, in the
semifinal round.
Hibbitts added $2,500 to his
earnings with the victory. Bohr
the teams bowling against each
other.
All of the matches were best
2 out of 3 baker games to simulate
the high school bowling
program. In the baker format,
there are typically five member
teams with each bowler bowling
two frames. Some of the
middle school teams had five,
four or even three members, so
to get the program going everyone
compromised and used the
members they had. If a team
had three members, then they
would bowl three frames each
and so on. Benavides said,”
Next year we will implement a
minimum roster, but this first
year, we wanted to make it
happen.”
Benavides is expecting the
program to grow next year
and has asked parents to help
with recruiting and coaching.
“Coaching all eleven teams
this year was difficult, but
rewarding at the same time. It
will allow the middle school
bowlers to get a few years
under their belt before they get
to compete at the high school
level,” said Benavides.
Finally for
Hibbitts!!!
By Tony Franklin, Publisher
Chris Hibbitts II can at last
call himself a PBA champion.
With his victory in the Fort
Sill Viper Open, he stopped his
event winless streak at 102.
He has had five total 2nd place
finishes to go with three 3rd
place finishes this year alone.
Hibbitts has been a
dominate force in the PBA SW
Region the last five years, he
just hasn’t won. He was Rookie
of the Year in 2007-08, led the
points in each of the last three
years and was Player of the
Year in 2011, but had not found
a way to break through to the
winners circle.
However that all changed on
Sunday, “I really couldn’t believe
it, the sense of accomplishment,
the fact I found a way to win
and not a way to lose. It was
pretty exciting,” he said.
The wait was over as he
overcame the familiar demons
in the final game against Bohr,
“I had some early opens but I
didn’t let it get to me. I threw
good shots in the 7th and
8th but left 10-pins but came
right back to strike out, added
Hibbitts.”
Hibbitts mentioned that
a talk with Clint Dacy after
the previous regional, helped
him get a different mindset to
stay more positive and keep
the negative thoughts away. It
clearly worked. “I knew I had
the talent, but there was one
wire that was off, and this time
I found a way to win, he said”
This victory was just as
satisfying for the rest of the
Hibbitts family as they got to
watch it though Live Stream
and were ready for daddy when
he got home. “My wife Sara and
girls Chrissa and Anna made
brownies for me, and had congratulation
signs for me when I
pulled in the driveway, it was a
special moment, and one I will
remember for a while.”
Chris would like to send a
special thanks to Del Ballard,
Derrick Lott, Tyler Jensen and
Brett Cooper for all of the help
and support.
Chris Tidwell led the scoring
WEEKLY GLANCE
(For May 19-May 25, 2012)
Tvaska extends participation
record at USBC Women’s
Championships
Mini Tvaska of St. Petersburg,
Fla., was the talk of
the town as she extended her
United States Bowling Congress
Women’s Championships
participation record with her
66th consecutive appearance
May 18-19.
The 94-year-old was
honored with a plaque, fruit
bouquet and other gifts and
graciously greeted the local media
to talk about her career on
the lanes at the USBC Women’s
Championships and at home.
“Some of my favorite
memories are from when we
used to bowl all day in the All-
Stars Tournament held at the
Chicago Armory,” Tvaska said.
“All the big names of bowling
were there - Don Carter,
Marion Ladewig and other
men and women who made the
sport such a huge draw.”
Tvaska began her Women’s
Championships run at the
1947 event in Grand Rapids,
Mich. She took ownership of
the tournament’s participation
record when she made her
62nd appearance in Detroit in
2008. Mary Covell of Chicago
previously held the record with
61 years.
Two other bowlers also were
recognized at the National
Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.,
this week for their dedication
to the tournament.
Ann Murray of Atlanta celebrated
50 consecutive years on
Jennifer Asplin of Oakley,
of a 299 game during
her team event to take the top
spots in Scratch All-Events and
Scratch Doubles on May 20.
The 36-year-old right-hander,
making her fifth tournament
appearance, became just
the 10th competitor in USBC
Women’s Championships
history to roll a 299 game,
which helped her to a 696
series in team. She followed
that performance with 715 in
singles and 710 in doubles for
a 2,121 scratch all-events score.
Beckie Eynon of Apalachin,
with 2,093.
her way to the top of the
singles standings with an 805
held the Diamond Singles lead
with 793, and KOs Pro Shop 2
of Ankeny, Iowa, led Diamond
The Ruby Division got new
doubles and all-events leaders
as Patricia Klinefelter of Deltona,
Fla., and Debra Brouwer
of New London, Conn., teamed
up to post a 1,305 doubles
effort, and Karla Alsgood of
Rio Linda, Calif., finished her
2012 event May 20 with a 1,925
handicap all-events total. Kiara
WEEKLY GLANCE
(For May 16-22, 2012)
Defending doubles champions
make run at USBC Open
Championships
Defending Regular Doubles
champions Brandon Tarabek of
Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and
Chad Reiffer of Grand Rapids,
Mich., made a run at a second
title May 17, but finished with
a 1,371 total, which is tied for
21st place this year in Baton
Rouge, La.
Tarabek had games of 198,
248 and 247 for a 693 set,
while Reiffer added 222, 217
and 239 for 678. Matt McNiel of
Prior Lake, Minn., and Charles
Vashaw of Deephaven, Minn.,
lead with 1,489.
“The mindset was to enjoy
the moment,” said Tarabek, a
27-year-old right-hander who
bowls league at Red Circle
Lanes in Parma, Ohio. “This is
something that doesn’t come
around very often, if at all, so I
wanted to enjoy it with my best
friend. I talked to some people
who have eagles, and they
said to just enjoy it and do the
best we could because it was
our moment to appreciate the
magnitude of what happened.”
Reiffer, a 25-year-old righthander,
added 687 in singles
and 613 in team for a 1,978
all-events total, and Tarabek
had 656 in singles and 584 in
team for 1,933.
Team champions compete at
Baton Rouge River Center
After being introduced as
the reigning Regular Team
champions at the Baton Rouge
River Center on May 18, USBC
Hall of Famer Jeff Richgels and
his Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 teammates
set out for their second
consecutive title at the USBC
Open Championships.
They got off to a slow start
“The
quickest
and best
way
to reach
people in
bowling–”
with a 947 game, more than
100 pins behind their target
for the opener, but quickly
bounced back with a 1,188
effort.
For the second year in a
row, the stage was set for
a dramatic ending, but the
accomplished group fell short,
finishing with 1,062 for a 3,197
total, which is good for 14th
place. Nicholas J’s Pro Shop 2
of La Crosse, Wis., leads with
3,401.
Last year at the National
Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.,
Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 closed with
a 1,281 game, the highest team
game in 109 years of Open
Championships competition,
and cruised to the title with a
3,473 total.
Mike Shady, who has posted
an all-events score of 1,900
or better in all 17 of his Open
Championships appearances,
led the way for Turbo 2-N-1
Grips 1 this year with a 675
series. He was followed by Gail
Myers Jr. (655), Richgels (643),
Marc McDowell (639) and Steve
Richter (585). Thousands of
bowling fans tuned in to watch
the action live on BOWL.com,
while hundreds more filled the
bleachers at the River Center.
A look ahead
