Page 2 | Thursday, May 31, 2012 | THE BOWLING NEWS By Leisha Murr We had a good time in Houston for the TCBA Playoff tournament, and although we didn’t pull off the re-peat for a win this year, we were pretty satisfied to make the finals and end up in a tie for 2nd place. I’m not gonna lie, we were definitely hoping for just one more pin, but a tie is way better than 3rd place. The full results will be in next week, so I won’t get into much more detail on the results. It’s a pretty stressful weekend to make it through 17 games without someone getting upset. We have seven ladies on our roster, and bowlers can switch out every game. It’s a tough decision to try to figure out who should bowl each game, especially when everyone is capable of putting up some good scores. Do you go with the highest averages and try to overcome the handicap with strikes, or do you put in some lower averages so your team gets a little handicap to even it out? We had the National TCBA Bowler of the Year and highest average, Mrs. Genie Franklin, on our team and she took her turn on the bench just like every other bowler on the team. Luckily my team helped me make the difficult decisions and realized there is no I in TEAM, you have to do what you think is best to get the team into a position to win. Do I regret some? Maybe a little since it came down to a pin for 2nd, but I don’t think there was anything more we could have done to get back on top. We will try again next year! After bowling all last weekend, I was glad Monday was just the league payoff and I didn’t have to put my hand into a bowling ball. It was also announced at the league meeting that after 26 years of being the secretary of the Classic High Pot League which she started, Arrelene Lorenzo has decided it is time to resign her position. She and Jack will continue to secretary the Thursday night league at Westcreek for as long as they can, but decided it was time to give one up. I’m honored that Arrelene and the league have entrusted me with the league and position of secretary for next fall. I know it will be a lot of work to fill her shoes and keep the league going strong, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. Bowling Parts, Inc. P.O. I know, since little league we’ve been taught to “call the ball” for a reason, but I didn’t think anyone else was even close to me. Needless to say, I hit the ground, and hard! I landed flat on my back and the back of my head without catching myself or breaking my fall with my hands or anything. When I opened my eyes I saw the birds flying around my head like they do in the cartoons. All of my limbs were numb and tingling. I was dizzy, but after a couple of minutes everything seemed to be fine. The next morning, I woke up and could barely move my neck. I must have gotten some whiplash. Now, four days later it still hurts just to hold my head up. When am I going to learn? I am getting to old for softball! It was a long week for me, so I didn’t make any plans for the weekend. I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend, and took the time to be thankful for all of those who serve or have lost their lives fighting for our country. The holiday weekend is always a good time to get together with family and friends and cookout or go to the lake and get ready for the summer. Seems like every year there are accidents or drownings at the lake on the holidays, so hopefully everyone was safe. Kids are getting out of school, fall leagues are over and its time to relax and enjoy the weather before it gets too hot. Holliday earned high-series honors with a 279/740 set while Beam captured highgame accolades with an awardwinning 12-bagger. TEXAS WHEELCHAIR Continued from Page 1 throughout our great country about our sport.” At age 15 when Beam began bowling, it wasn’t something he really wanted to do, but after his family, which had always been involved in the sport, insisted, he gave it a try. The first season he bowled, Beam averaged just 69 but said the sport “got into his blood” and he never looked back. Over the past few years, Beam has become more serious about his abilities as a wheelchair bowler. He joined the AWBA and began competing in the organization’s tournaments. He will compete in the AWBA National Championships next month in Milwaukee. But the most important thing Beam wants people to take from his accomplishment is that bowling is a sport for anyone confined to a wheelchair, not just those who want to be the best. “The best thing about wheelchair bowling is you have that sense of camaraderie you have in sports,” Beam said. “You don’t have to be good, because anyone can bowl and it’s fun for anyone no matter what your average is. But people can’t get discouraged because I’m a testament to how you can start with a low average and make it to the top with hard work and perseverance.” Even with all the hard work Beam has put into the sport, he never imagined he would be celebrating a perfect game. “Bowling a 300 game was something I never thought was possible, and I can’t explain what it feels like,” Beam said. “I threw the last ball and I knew I had hit my mark and everything was right. When it struck, I was overwhelmed. If I could have fallen to my knees, I would have.” The American Wheelchair Bowling Association, which certifies its competition with the United States Bowling Congress, has more than 500 members and conducts an average of 10 tournaments each year.
