Joe Lopez wins the
Brunswick Challenge
in Las Vegas
By Tyson Branagan
Staff Writer
In his first return trip to
Las Vegas in five years to bowl
the megabuck tournaments
Joe Lopez, of Rockwall, threw
the final strike at the Orleans
Bowling Center and was the
last man standing in the
Brunswick Challenge event to
take home a $5,000 check for
winning.
As a special side event
of the TAT Amateur Classic
tournament, the Brunswick
Challenge requires bowlers to
use Brunswick bowling balls
exclusively to get nine or better
on each shot in the finals, with
bowlers who get eight or less
being eliminated until the final
four bowlers are remaining.
Once the final four bowlers
are determined, all are guaranteed
at least $1,000, and then
must strike on three of five
shots across five lanes, or be
eliminated.
Drawing the fourth and
final position to bowl, Lopez
Joe Lopez
resident Aric Acon throw the
necessary three strikes, along
with Debbie Ayers, while Brent
Bowers failed to advance.
Lopez got up and struck on
his first attempt, then threw
poor shots on his next two attempts,
putting the pressure on
himself to strike on his final
two to advance.
Lopez did just that, and it
was on to a one-ball sudden
death roll-off between the three
bowlers.
“I struck the first ball then
pitched the next two out to the
gutter,” said Lopez. “I just got
up there on the fourth and fifth
balls and told myself to relax
and throw it.”
In sudden death, Lopez and
Ayers both struck, while Acon
managed only to get only eight
and therefore was eliminated.
It was now down to Lopez
and Ayers for the $5,000 prize,
with the loser taking home
$1,000 so there was plenty of
pressure. It only took one more
shot, as Ayers got nine and
Lopez struck, earning himself
the largest payday in his bowling
career.
“It feels good,” said Lopez
on winning. “I was nervous
when we got to the $1,000
round, but managed to keep
calm and make good shots.”
Lopez earned his entry into
the Challenge as part of the
marathon entry where bowlers
pay a one-time fee and get
multiple main event entries,
two Brunswick High Performance
balls, the new C-System
4.5 and Revolver, as well as a
plastic ball, and an entry into
the Challenge.
Lopez used the new Revolver
all the way through to
the victory.
“It is a very good ball,”
said Lopez on the Revolver. “It
works well as a heavy oil ball
and I was impressed at how
smooth it rolled for me, giving
me confidence throughout,”
Lopez added.
Lopez also qualified for
the main event finals on July
2 with a 665 score to earn
himself a shot at the $20,000
TAT Classic first prize on July
4th.
He advanced two rounds
into the finals before being
eliminated, taking home an
additional $700 for the tournament
and making the long
drive home from Las Vegas to
Rockwall much sweeter.
“I couldn’t afford to fly out
there. I can now, but I am just
going to enjoy the long drive
home,” Lopez said.
