Systems<br />
CARISMA-Telematics Co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated Architectures foR the Interconnection <strong>of</strong><br />
networks for Susta<strong>in</strong>able Mobility with telematics<br />
Applications is an Accompany<strong>in</strong>g Measure <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Transport</strong> sector <strong>of</strong> the Telematics Applications<br />
Programme.<br />
CARISMA-<strong>Transport</strong> focus the promotion <strong>of</strong> improved <strong>in</strong>terconnections and<br />
<strong>in</strong>teroperability between local and long-distance passenger networks for all transport<br />
modes by:<br />

Research<strong>in</strong>g ways <strong>of</strong> overcom<strong>in</strong>g barriers to transport decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Advis<strong>in</strong>g on the location, plann<strong>in</strong>g, design, implementation, management and<br />
operation <strong>of</strong> transport <strong>in</strong>terchanges; and<br />
Identify<strong>in</strong>g roles for <strong>in</strong>telligent transport (ITS)- or transport telematics- <strong>in</strong><br />
enhanc<strong>in</strong>g transport <strong>in</strong>termodality.<br />
The project identified a number <strong>of</strong> projects designed to promote the effective<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> European transport networks, to re<strong>view</strong> their <strong>results</strong> and make<br />
recommendations for the future. Lille (France), Frankfurt (Germany), Budapest<br />
(Hungary), Trieste (Italy) and London (UK).<br />
CARISMA-Telematics is an evaluation <strong>of</strong> how seven European cities/regions are<br />
adopt<strong>in</strong>g transport telematics <strong>in</strong> the management <strong>of</strong> their transport systems. It re<strong>view</strong>s<br />
the technical, <strong>in</strong>stitutional, political and f<strong>in</strong>ancial aspects <strong>of</strong> telematics deployment,<br />
primarily as it affects road and public transport. The project looked at trials and<br />
demonstrations <strong>of</strong> new telematics applications, and also evaluated cases where the<br />
technology is sufficiently established to justify full-scale deployment. The conclusions<br />
<strong>of</strong> the project illustrate clearly the great potential that telematics <strong>of</strong>fer cities and<br />
regions at the start <strong>of</strong> the 21 st century.<br />
Only an <strong>in</strong>formation pack about the CARISMA-<strong>Transport</strong> project was available from<br />
the Co-ord<strong>in</strong>ators, as the f<strong>in</strong>al report has not yet been published. The F<strong>in</strong>al Report for<br />
the CARISMA-Telematics is downloadable from CORDIS database.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the project have been considered as experts <strong>in</strong> the topic<br />
and the sites visited by the CARISMA-<strong>Transport</strong> team <strong>in</strong>cluded as Study sites.<br />
No lead<strong>in</strong>g educational <strong>in</strong>stitutes are <strong>in</strong>cluded between CARISMA-<strong>Transport</strong> partners<br />
POLIS ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a website where <strong>in</strong>formation about CARISMA is to be found.<br />

On their own, transport telematics and <strong>in</strong>telligent transport systems will not solve the<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g problems <strong>of</strong> traffic congestion and the resultant effects which many cities<br />
