Appendix 1B: Review <strong>of</strong> search strategies <strong>for</strong> <strong>Apixaban</strong> studies<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical effectiveness<br />

Limitations<br />

The ERG questioned <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term Arthroscopy ra<strong>the</strong>r than Arthroplasty <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> searches<br />

Medl<strong>in</strong>e, Cochrane and C<strong>in</strong>ahl databases. The Manufacturer reran <strong>the</strong>se searches with <strong>the</strong><br />

additional term, but <strong>the</strong> ERG noted a few rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g weaknesses with this facet, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g miss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

truncation and synonyms such as replac$ or arthroplast$ or pros<strong>the</strong>$ or surgery or surgical or<br />

implant$ (see Appendix 1A).<br />

The manufacturer stated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir response that <strong>the</strong> term arthroscopy was <strong>the</strong> relevant Mesh term to<br />

use <strong>for</strong> those databases. Medl<strong>in</strong>e and Cochrane do conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mesh terms “Arthroplasty,<br />

replacement, knee” and “Arthroplasty, replacement, hip” and <strong>the</strong> ERG notes that <strong>the</strong>se were used<br />

by <strong>the</strong> manufacturer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cost Effectiveness searches. 11<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>Apixaban</strong> synonym “Eliquis” nor <strong>the</strong> CAS registry number were searched, although<br />

an additional search by <strong>the</strong> ERG showed that this made no change to <strong>the</strong> results (Appendix 1A).<br />

Limited use <strong>of</strong> truncation. Examples:<br />

i. L<strong>in</strong>e #91 from Medl<strong>in</strong>e search, should use replac* ra<strong>the</strong>r than replacement to pick up<br />

replace, replaced, replac<strong>in</strong>g, replacement and replacements.<br />

There were a number <strong>of</strong> redundant terms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strategies. Examples:<br />

i. L<strong>in</strong>e #4 from <strong>the</strong> Medl<strong>in</strong>e search, “exp Thrombophlebitis/” is redundant due to <strong>the</strong><br />

previous l<strong>in</strong>e #3, “exp Venous Thrombosis/”.<br />

Although start dates and search dates were reported <strong>the</strong>re was no Issue given <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cochrane<br />

search.<br />

Indirect and mixed treatment comparisons<br />

Searches were carried out on all NICE required databases and used <strong>the</strong> same strategies as 9.2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Industry submission. As well as <strong>the</strong> previous limitations <strong>the</strong> ERG also noted:<br />

There were a number <strong>of</strong> redundant terms <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strategies. Examples:<br />

ii. L<strong>in</strong>e #4 from <strong>the</strong> Medl<strong>in</strong>e search, “exp Thrombophlebitis/” is redundant due to <strong>the</strong><br />

previous l<strong>in</strong>e #3, “exp Venous Thrombosis/”.<br />

iii. L<strong>in</strong>e #18 from <strong>the</strong> Embase search, “exp Daltepar<strong>in</strong>/” is redundant due to l<strong>in</strong>e #17, “exp<br />

low molecular weight hepar<strong>in</strong>/”.<br />

Adverse events (comparators)<br />

In utiliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same searches as with Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Effectiveness and Mixed Treatment Comparators<br />

<strong>the</strong> search strategies <strong>in</strong> this section carried <strong>the</strong> same problems as <strong>the</strong> previous sections. Given <strong>the</strong><br />

CRD advice on not us<strong>in</strong>g RCT filters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se cases, 12 <strong>the</strong> ERG would recommend remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

RCT filter on L<strong>in</strong>es #27-86 (Medl<strong>in</strong>e Search 9.2.4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Industry submission) and replace <strong>the</strong>m<br />

with a suitable adverse events filter, a number <strong>of</strong> which can be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ISSG Search Filters<br />

Resource. 68<br />
