Ice Factory Story and Photos by Eli Tatamby Motor-racing fans may be surprised to learn that the spectacular discipline of ice racing is one of the fastest growing motorsports in the world. Rarely seen outside of France, Italy, Finland and Canada, the sport has, nevertheless, a large and expanding following, with races already planned to accommodate growing interest in Japan and China. Once held on frozen lakes and rivers – a few still are – the mostly purpose-built circuits such as Chamonix (France), Livigno (Italy), Sherbrooke (Quebec) and Saint- Eustache (Montreal) play host to annual races that decide a burgeoning international race series. Building a track can take months. At Chamonix, for example, after the first snowfall in early December, the track is repeatedly sprayed with water – at nightfall and at dawn. By the day of the race, more than 00 hours of spraying will have been completed to obtain an average ice layer 0 to 0 centimeters thick. And it’s in Chamonix that the most renowned event of the ice-racing calendar takes place: Lles heures sur glace de Chamonix Mont-Blanc. Regularly attracting 15 000 spectators, this annual classic has played host to some of the greats of Formula One, including Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi. We Know Race Cars! The tracks are designed to allow plenty of overtaking – the combination of ice and speed not always allowing a smooth passage. Whatever happens, though, one thing is guaranteed: a spectacular show. Although specially modified for the unique conditions, ice-racing cars are similar to those used in the World Rally Championship. In each race, there are seven heats of thirty minutes, on tracks with an average length of 1, kilometers. Teams of two or three blast four-wheeldrive rally cars – predominantly equipped with Pirelli studded tyres – around the ice tracks at speeds up to 150 kilometers per hour. There is little margin for driver error or car-component failure. Providing the hardware is motorsport specialist, Tork Engineering. Based at Amilly in France, Tork has been part of the FAM Automobiles group of companies since 1999, and has formidable experience within the motorsport industry. Company founder and director, Bernard Bouhier, has been involved with various disciplines in the sector since 19 7, including rally car racing, touring car events, Formula 000 and, in recent years, ice racing. 1 www.<strong>Haas</strong>CNC.com
