World Cup, Fabricati<strong>on</strong><br />

Equipment & Teamwork<br />

While recently watching <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> World<br />

Cup from Germany <strong>on</strong> telev<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>, I<br />

was struck by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> many similarities<br />

between World Cup soccer (football) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheet<br />

metal fabricati<strong>on</strong> equipment industry. I should<br />

clarify <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> I am not referring to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unfortunate<br />

physical c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>tati<strong>on</strong> at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

champi<strong>on</strong>ship match between Italy and France –<br />

although I guess in all of our careers we may have<br />

felt like we’ve been “headbutted” at <strong>on</strong>e time or<br />

ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. Ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, I am talking about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game plan,<br />

teamwork, and selfless play <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> often spells <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

difference between victory or defeat in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game of<br />

soccer…and <str<strong>on</strong>g>machine</str<strong>on</strong>g> tool sales.<br />

While not extremely popular in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> U.S., <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

World Cup <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> widely watched<br />

sporting event in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world and has been held<br />

every four years since 1930, with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> excepti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years during World War II. Talk about<br />

globalizati<strong>on</strong>, 198 nati<strong>on</strong>s attempted to qualify for<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2006 World Cup. Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> number was pared<br />

down to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 32 nati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> actually competed in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> World Cup.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheet metal fabricati<strong>on</strong> industry, Finn-<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> technological advances in punching,<br />

forming, laser cutting, bending, and automated<br />

material management have created a global market<br />

for our <str<strong>on</strong>g>machine</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, cells, and systems. Many<br />

companies are reaching outside traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

geographic borders to attract internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Host team Germany, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> red jerseys, played <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> many<br />

competitive matches of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2006 World Cup against Argentina.<br />

LUBRICATE (X1…X6)<br />

X6 Selecti<strong>on</strong> of sheet lubricator (1 or 2; extra opti<strong>on</strong>)<br />

The subroutine sprays <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rectangular area determined by parameters<br />

X1…X4. The coordinates are given from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> actual zero point (from<br />

sheet corner if no zero point offsets have been made). Even after<br />

re<str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>ing (REPOSIT) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coordinates are given from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheet<br />

corner. Ax<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> speed <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> determined with parameter X5, and with th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

value you can regulate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount of lubricant coming <strong>on</strong>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheet.<br />

At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end of subroutine LUBRICATE, ax<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> speed <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> set to maximum.<br />

business. And while some developing<br />

countries have huge labor costs advantages,<br />

Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s technological advances have<br />

helped level <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> playing field through<br />

unmanned operati<strong>on</strong>s and increased<br />

producti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Soccer Teams<br />

The objective of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> game of soccer <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />

simply score more goals than your opp<strong>on</strong>ent<br />

by putting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ball past <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> goalkeeper into a<br />

net. Each team has 11 players <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field.<br />

Even though <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> players <strong>on</strong> a team may have<br />

different talent levels and styles, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

optimum <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> to have all 11 play as a team<br />

with a game plan to defeat <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opp<strong>on</strong>ent.<br />

The player <str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>s include:<br />

Forwards (striker & wings) – players<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> are usually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scorers.<br />

Midfielders (halfbacks) – players <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

are links for both offense and defense.<br />

Defense (fullbacks) – players <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> are<br />

defenders. Fullbacks prevent shots<br />

from being taken, without blocking<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir goalie’s view.<br />

Goalkeeper – <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>ly</str<strong>on</strong>g> player <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> can<br />

touch, hold or bounce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ball in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

penalty area. The goalie’s main job <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

to prevent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r team from<br />

scoring.<br />

Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> Team<br />

The Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> team c<strong>on</strong>s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts of<br />

R &D and design engineers, sales &<br />

marketing pers<strong>on</strong>nel, service and<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> technicians, and various<br />

support groups. While our employees<br />

have different levels of experience and<br />

various styles, teamwork <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> key<br />

ingredient to our past, present, and<br />

future success.<br />

A short-term goal of <str<strong>on</strong>g>machine</str<strong>on</strong>g> tool<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>builder</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>, of course, to sell more<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>machine</str<strong>on</strong>g>s than its competitors.<br />

However, Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s game plan <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> not<br />

so myopic. We believe <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> success in<br />

today’s sheet metal fabricati<strong>on</strong> industry<br />

depends not <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>ly</str<strong>on</strong>g> up<strong>on</strong> an equipment<br />

manufacturer’s ability to meet its customers’<br />

current needs, but also up<strong>on</strong> its v<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> and<br />

strength to anticipate and resp<strong>on</strong>d to future<br />

changes in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> marketplace.<br />

The new marketplace realities match<br />

Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s product line perfectly. For<br />

many years, Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> has added versatility<br />

to individual work stages by integrating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<br />

with automated material management and<br />

making automati<strong>on</strong> as flexible as possible.<br />

Our game plan has always been to improve<br />

3<br />

by Mikko Lindstrom, President<br />

our customers’ productivity and profitability by<br />

giving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m a competitive edge.<br />

Today, we have proven globally<br />

acknowledged soluti<strong>on</strong>s for any sheet metal<br />

fabricati<strong>on</strong> need with a variety of work stages<br />

and methods. In additi<strong>on</strong>, we not <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>ly</str<strong>on</strong>g> have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

modules for optimal automating process<br />

material flow, but also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> applicati<strong>on</strong><br />

engineering knowledge to specify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> optimum<br />

in each case. Our<br />

product range <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

wide enough so<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> our customers<br />

do not have to<br />

comprom<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>e to<br />

achieve Lean<br />

Manufacturing in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir fabricati<strong>on</strong><br />

facilities.<br />

Integrating<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>machine</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry to work<br />

toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r seamlessly<br />

from part to part<br />

and operati<strong>on</strong> to<br />

operati<strong>on</strong> has been<br />

resolved by Finn-<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Night<br />

Train Flexible<br />

Manufacturing<br />

System. In additi<strong>on</strong> to punching, shearing,<br />

and/or laser cutting, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Night Train allows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

additi<strong>on</strong> of robotic press brakes or an in-line<br />

panel bender to automate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bending process.<br />

Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> system allows customers to bend <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>ly</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> are needed for today’s producti<strong>on</strong><br />

while allowing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parts to be bent in different<br />

sequences than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were punched to match<br />

assembly needs. Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> eliminates extra work in<br />

process while increasing throughput.<br />
