Laser Automati<strong>on</strong> Sparks Productivity<br />
at Great Lakes Manufacturing, Inc.<br />
When Great Lakes Manufacturing,<br />
Inc., Corry, PA, began operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
in 1998 as a prec<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> sheet<br />
metal fabricati<strong>on</strong> shop, its original functi<strong>on</strong> was<br />
to be a supplier to s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ter company Great Lakes<br />
Case & Cabinet. However, th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> modest<br />
objective was met and dramatically exceeded<br />
thanks to a stellar performance by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
company’s management and employees.<br />
“Currently, we have 102 employees and about<br />
60% of our business <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> for our s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ter company<br />
and 40% <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> for c<strong>on</strong>tract customers,” explains<br />
Robert Low<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, owner.<br />
According to Low<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, h<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> company’s<br />
philosophy of investment in people and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
latest technology helped to make Great Lakes<br />
Manufacturing a leader in prec<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> sheet metal<br />
fabricati<strong>on</strong>. “Our manufacturing plant occupies<br />
over 90,000 square feet in prime locati<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>g<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> I-90 and I-79 corridors of northwestern<br />
Pennsylvania,” says Low<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. “We’ve tried to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> ourselves as <strong>on</strong>e of a handful of<br />
fabricators <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> have our level of capabilities.<br />
The latest technology combined with a<br />
commitment to lean manufacturing are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
ways <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> we have attempted to differentiate<br />
ourselves,” Low<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r c<strong>on</strong>tinues. “Automati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
robotics, informati<strong>on</strong> technology, and a high<br />
level of employee skill allow us to be<br />
competitive in a global ec<strong>on</strong>omy. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
past two years, we have invested more <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
$3-milli<strong>on</strong> into our facility.”<br />
Part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> investment was earmarked for<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> procurement of a new laser in 2004. Fred<br />
Cooke, director of engineering /MIS, was<br />
chosen to search <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> marketplace for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> latest<br />
laser technology. Cooke began <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> search during<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d quarter. “I began with some of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
big traditi<strong>on</strong>al names in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> laser industry,” he<br />
explains. “I v<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ited several companies and<br />
thoroughly investigated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best lasers <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
market. I sent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time study to each of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se companies. I also came across <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Finn-<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> L6 Laser Work Center. Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> was a<br />
name I first heard in Europe.<br />
“I sent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time study to Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
When <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time studies of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same nesting run<br />
came back, Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s time was 60% faster<br />
than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next best time. It was a massive<br />
producti<strong>on</strong> improvement. We also received<br />
some parts back so we were able to check <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Great Lakes Manufacturing uses technology, like <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Finn-<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> laser and automated material handling equipment,<br />
to differentiate itself from competitors.<br />
edge quality and everything worked out very<br />
well. We selected <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> L6 with load/unload and a<br />
10-shelve storing tower which was installed in<br />
December, 2004.”<br />
The Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> L6 Laser Work Center<br />
utilizes a flying optics/moving beam system<br />
driven by a linear drive motor system to achieve<br />
maximum speeds, even while cutting small<br />
notches or narrow c<strong>on</strong>tours.<br />
The L6 features a 4 kW fast axial flow CO 2<br />
laser. Cutting speeds up to 60 m/min<br />
(2.362" /min) are reached using nitrogen as<br />
cutting ass<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>t gas. The L6 can process sheet sizes<br />
“Over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 1 1/2 years, we’ve had a heavy flow of lean<br />
manufacturing – we’re not batch manufacturing<br />
anymore. We are producing a lean flow with Finn-<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> automati<strong>on</strong>.”<br />
up to 60" x 120" and up to 0.78" in thickness.<br />
Performance values include a <str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>ing speed<br />
of 11,811" /min., accelerati<strong>on</strong> over 2 g, and<br />
cutting speeds up to 2,363" /min. Unlike<br />
c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al re<str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>ing, where straight line<br />
movements of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cutting head waste time,<br />
Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g> optimizes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cutting head<br />
movement with “Ping P<strong>on</strong>g” re<str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>ing. Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
smooth and efficient transiti<strong>on</strong> translates to<br />
added producti<strong>on</strong> speeds – up to 1,000<br />
holes/min are now possible. The patented L6<br />
rigid frame design withstands all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> forces of<br />
high-speed <str<strong>on</strong>g>positi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>ing and provides a solid base<br />
for stable beam delivery optics.<br />

Robert Low<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, owner (left) and Fred Cooke, director<br />
of engineering/MIS, report <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> L6 laser has<br />
allowed Great Lakes to fully embrace lean/flow<br />
manufacturing.<br />
Automati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> Key<br />
According to<br />
Cooke, automati<strong>on</strong><br />
was ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r key<br />
reas<strong>on</strong> for choosing<br />
Finn-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Power</str<strong>on</strong>g>. “With<br />
o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r lasers, automati<strong>on</strong><br />
involved taking down an<br />
entire shelf of material and<br />
working with <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g>,” reflects<br />
Cooke. “With <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> L6, we take<br />
down <strong>on</strong>e sheet at a time, so we<br />
can nest and kit parts. I can run<br />
a 13 gauge sheet and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n a sheet<br />
of 16 gauge and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n a sheet of<br />
aluminum…and build up kits <str<strong>on</strong>g>that</str<strong>on</strong>g>
