What is “Old School” and “New School”, in your opinion? Do you think
that those two can be combined?
There is no Old School and New School! Instead, there’s one School with
two classrooms, separated by a few of decades or so (age wise). The new
generation can be influenced positively from the previous one but not the
other way round, as you would have to be a time traveller in order to do that
(something like Doctor Who)...
The term ‘Old School’ exists only throughout the last few decades and is
referred to (as far as music is concerned) as a form of respect for being
influenced by your predecessors in a positive manner.
But in our day and age, the term Old School has been pimped out profusely
by marketing strategies and executive people, just like many
other appealing words such as “Democracy”,”Organic”,”Environment
Friendly”,”Underground” and so forth...
How would you describe your sound?
Oh boy oh boy oh boy... I could describe my sound either by saying many
things about it, or using just a few words... Or maybe I could paint a picture
of my description, or... I tell you what my friend, I will use the lyrics of a
Peace Division track (an Old School one) :
“I remember I walked into the room and thought WOW, what is this sound
that’s so deep and penetrates my body, I never heard anything like it before...
The speaker was kicking out this beefy deep bass, that’s how I would describe
it. Some of the tracks were slamming hard, others were dreamy.
I felt FREE, this music makes me feel FREE”
Tell us about Rhythmatic. Was it a project that you had in mind for a long
time, or, rather, a spontaneous idea carried out successfully?
Rhythmatic started back in 2007 as a very random thing. I had no plans
to start my own night in London but then I met the crazy twins (Kyriakos &
Kostas Poulos) and the rest is history...
London is the most competitive and unforgiving environment on the planet
for aspiring promoters. People don’t realise that when we put on a night
and get four hundred, five hundred people at a time, there are another fifty
parties in the same square mile that we have to compete with!
Being consistent in London is a rarity and there are only a handful of parties
that have survived throughout the last decade (or since the explosion
of independent warehouse events). This high pressure environment pushes
the quality of parties upwards all the time, and I am proud to say that
we have played our role in this process as much as any other East London
promoter.

Πιστεύεις ότι συνδυάζονται αυτά τα δύο;
Δεν υπάρχει Old School και New School! Αντ’ αυτού, υπάρχει θα έλεγα «ένα
σχολείο με δύο τάξεις», οι οποίες διαχωρίζονται από κάποιες δεκαετίες,
από άποψη ηλικίας. Η νέα γενιά μπορεί να επηρεαστεί θετικά από την
προηγούμενη όμως όχι το αντίστροφο, αφού θα έπρεπε κανείς να μπορεί
να ταξιδέψει στο χρόνο για να το κάνει αυτό (κάτι σαν τον Doctor Who)...
Ο όρος ‘Οld school’ υφίσταται μόνο τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες και
αναφέρεται, μουσικά, σε μια μορφή σεβασμού προς τους προκάτοχούς
μας για τις θετικές επιρροές που είχαν σε εμάς.
Όμως στις μέρες μας, στην εποχή μας, ο όρος Old School έχει υποστεί
ασύστολη εκμετάλλευση από στρατηγικές και επαγγελματίες του marketing,
όπως άλλωστε και άλλες ελκυστικές λέξεις και εκφράσεις όπως η
«Δημοκρατία», το «Οργανικό», το «Φιλικό προς το Περιβάλλον», το «Underground»
και ούτω καθ’εξής....
Πώς θα περιέγραφες τον ήχο σου;
Oh boy... Θα μπορούσα να περιγράψω τον ήχο μου λέγοντας πολλά
πράγματα, ή χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο λίγες λέξεις... Ή ίσως θα μπορούσα
να ζωγραφίσω μια εικόνα της περιγραφής μου, ή.... Θα σου πω κάτι φίλε
μου, θα χρησιμοποιήσω τους στίχους ενός κομματιού των Peace Division
(ενός Old School κομματιού) :
«Θυμάμαι μπήκα στο δωμάτιο και σκέφτηκα, wow! Ποιος είναι αυτός ο
ήχος ο τόσο βαθύς που διαπερνά το σώμα μου, ποτέ δεν έχω ξανακούσει
κάτι τέτοιο...
Το ηχείο κλωτσούσε μ’ αυτό το χοντρό, βαθύ μπάσο, έτσι θα το περιέγραφα.
Κάποια κομμάτια χτυπούσαν σκληρά, άλλα ήταν πιο ονειρικά.
Ένιωσα ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΣ, αυτή η μουσική με κάνει να αισθάνομαι ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΣ»
Μίλησέ μας για τη Rhythmatic. Ήταν ένα project που υπήρχε
αρκετό καιρό στο μυαλό σας ή ήταν μια αυθόρμητη ιδέα που τελικά
υλοποιήθηκε με επιτυχία ;
Η Rythmatic ξεκίνησε το 2007 πολύ αόριστα. Δεν είχα σχέδια να ξεκινήσω
δικά μου events στο Λονδίνο, όμως μετά γνώρισα τα τρελά δίδυμα
(Κυριάκος και Κώστας Πούλος) και τα υπόλοιπα είναι γνωστά...
Το Λονδίνο είναι το πιο ανταγωνιστικό και ανελέητο περιβάλλον στον
πλανήτη για όσους φιλοδοξούν να γίνουν promoters. Ο κόσμος δεν
αντιλαμβάνεται ότι όταν διοργανώνουμε ένα event και μαζεύουμε
τετρακόσια και πεντακόσια άτομα τη φορά, έχουμε να ανταγωνιστούμε κι
άλλα πενήντα parties που γίνονται στην ίδια περιοχή!
Το να είσαι σταθερός στο Λονδίνο είναι σπάνιο, τα parties που
έχουν επιβιώσει την τελευταία δεκαετία (ή έστω από την έκρηξη των
ανεξάρτητων warehouse events) είναι μετρημένα στα δάχτυλα. Αυτό το
περιβάλλον με την τόση πίεση αναβαθμίζει συνεχώς την ποιότητα των parties
και μπορώ να πω με υπερηφάνεια πως έχουμε παίξει ρόλο σ’ αυτή
τη διαδικασία, τόσο σημαντικό όσο κι οποιοσδήποτε άλλος promoter στο
Ανατολικό Λονδίνο.
