Glasgow’s Fit and Healthy To enhance the health and wellbeing of people who live, work and visit the city
Glasgow Life Annual Review 2011/12 11 Glasgow is Scotland’s capital of sport. As we count down the days to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow Life is playing a crucial role in supporting grassroots sport as well as elite athletes and the stars of the future. The City’s bid to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 is proof of our shared ambition to inspire all of our citizens to improve their health and wellbeing through access to some of the best health and leisure facilities in the UK. Glasgow Sport had a very successful year, delivering a broad range of activities and programmes to support the City’s health improvement agenda. Attendances soared to almost six million at indoor and outdoor sport and leisure facilities across the City which is an 8% increase on the number of attendances recorded the previous year. At the same time, the number of recorded attendances at sport development programmes reached 750,000, exceeding the annual target by 15%. 6,000,000 5,000,000 4,000,000 ANNUAL ATTENDANCES AT SPORTS AND LEISURE FACILITIES Glasgow Club membership sales increased by 7.5% to over 24,000 members and generated income of £6.6 million. Corporate partnerships with organisations including the NHS have been further increased, promoting and increasing the accessibility of regular physical activity to a significant proportion of Glasgow’s population. 24,000 members 2011/12 2010/11 2009/10 2008/9 2007/8 Glasgow Life remains committed to providing free swims for juveniles and senior citizens. Demand for this service has increased year-on-year and, despite the ongoing works at Glasgow Club venues at Tollcross and North Woodside, the number of free swims FREE SWIMS increased for the fifth successive year to 270,000 which is a 6% increase compared to 2010/11. 2011/12 270,000 Glasgow Life’s Learn to Swim programme is hugely popular and gives children and young people a life-long skill. The programme delivered almost 1,900 swimming lessons by fully qualified swimming coaches with occupancy rates for beginner lessons at 98%. Twenty six schools with pupils with Additional Support Needs took part in a free Learn to Swim programme, with more than 6,500 attendances. WHITEHILL OVER 100,000 ATTENDANCES Glasgow Club Whitehill had its most successful year to date following significant investment in gym and fitness studio facilities and recorded over 100,000 attendances. Swipe Out, Glasgow Life’s swimming competition for juveniles, held its third annual event in December 2011. More than 2,000 young people competed in seven swimming pools in the City. The first prize trophy went to Glasgow Club Castlemilk and the Spirit trophy was won by Glasgow Club Easterhouse.
