Glasgow Life Annual Review 2011/12 9
Chief Executive’s Welcome
Across our 154 venues, more
people than ever before
are taking part in sport
and cultural activities – and
our partnerships with other
organisations, not least
Glasgow City Council, are helping to create
a dynamic and vibrant city which is wellequipped
to deal with the challenges ahead.
Glasgow Life makes a hugely significant
contribution to the City’s priorities while
delivering the very best value public services
to citizens and visitors alike. And we are
delivering.
Across the board, our Statutory Performance
Indicators are up on the previous year. Our
Community Interest Company (CIC) performed
exceptionally well, generating profits of some
£1.7 million, all of which was gift-aided to
the charity for investment in frontline services.
Since we were established, the CIC has
provided more than £5 million to the charity,
far outstripping the target of £2 million over the
same period.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum reported
an excellent year with one million attendances
and retained its VisitScotland 5 Star status, a
feat which has recently been matched by the
Riverside Museum.
Glasgow Music continued to inspire, with
the second year of its Minimal programme
going from strength to strength. Across the
Glasgow Music programme, audiences
topped 485,000. Celtic Connections enjoyed
another record year, with more than 100,000
attendances and ticket sales topping £1.1
million and this autumn, Celtic Connections
will travel to Chicago to highlight on a global
stage, some of Scotland’s finest talent.
Our events programme continues to provide
something to tempt all tastes. The 2011 World
Pipe Band Championships, played host to
8,000 pipers and drummers, from across the
globe, in front of more than 30,000 people.
The Merchant City Festival was also a recordbreaker,
attracting more than 90,000 people
to the three-day event and the O2 Glasgow
Mela was expanded to two days, allowing
30,000 visitors to enjoy the UK’s largest, and
best, multi-cultural showcase.
The Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run
attracted more than 22,500 entries and
the Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k
retained its position as the largest all-female
road race in the UK, with 12,250 runners
signed up.
All of the work we do is underlined by the
enthusiasm, pride and dedication of our
staff and I never fail to be impressed by their
unswerving commitment.
Our Board, all of whom are volunteers and
unpaid, have helped to drive our achievements
to date, allowing us to have confidence in
the ambitious programme we are continuing
to progress. I want to thank them for their
commitment, support and expertise.
As we look forward to the 2014 Glasgow
Commonwealth Games, I have no doubt that
the city will be ready and our citizens, inspired
by culture and sport, will be on hand to offer
the friendliest of welcomes to the world.
Dr Bridget McConnell
