Former Chair’s Welcome
Glasgow Life is a unique
organisation and it was a
privilege to Chair a proud
and ambitious charity,
which has at its heart, a
determination to improve the
lives of everyone in the City.
Across services, attendances are up
significantly. Annual attendances at sports and
leisure facilities were just shy of 6 million, up 8
per cent, and crucial to developing a lasting
legacy of increased physical activity as we
approach 2014.
Across the city’s network of 33 libraries,
attendances have increased to 5 million. Some
4.4 million visits were in person and 600,000
‘virtual visits’ were recorded on the online library
resource.
At a time when some libraries across the
country are under threat, Glasgow continues to
invest, ensuring that libraries are no longer just
places where you can borrow books. Glasgow
Life helped 11,000 people with computer
classes that helped to transform their lives.
And Glasgow Life is determined that every
child has the very best opportunity in life. Last
year, there were almost 67,000 attendances
recorded at our programmes designed to
support parents and carers of pre-school
children. With classes to support positive
parenting and programmes such as Toddler’s
Tales and Bounce & Rhyme sessions continuing
to grow, Glasgow Life is providing support at a
critical time in children’s development.
Glasgow Life continues to play its part
in increasing employability, including the
recruitment of Modern Apprentices. At the
Commonwealth Arena, recruitment for new staff
has included opportunities for young people
who have been out of work for significant
periods.
There has been increased take-up of the
Glasgow Young Scot & Kidz Cards, with
80,000 card-holders across the City. The
scheme incentivises opportunities in physical
health and activity, with discounts for the
Glasgow Club and major events, such as the
Junior Great Scottish Run.
Glasgow Life is also managing a £2.13 million
fund, established by Glasgow City Council,
which is increasing investment in 31 community
facilities.
In my time as Chair of Glasgow Life, I’ve been
amazed by the breadth and depth of services
on offer and I have no doubt of the value
placed on them by the people of this great
City.
Councillor George Redmond
