Capital Developments<br />
<strong>Glasgow</strong> <strong>Life</strong>’s continuing programme to<br />
improve a diverse range of cultural and<br />
sporting facilities within the City, delivered on a<br />
number of key projects during <strong>2011</strong>/<strong>12</strong>.<br />
<strong>Glasgow</strong> <strong>Life</strong> works as project sponsor,<br />
coordinator and client on behalf of<br />
<strong>Glasgow</strong> City Council on all of the following<br />
developments. Many of the projects are key to<br />
the delivery of the Commonwealth Games in<br />
2014 and sustaining a strong legacy for years<br />
after. The <strong>2011</strong>/<strong>12</strong> highlights include:<br />
• The iconic Riverside Museum building was<br />
successfully opened in June <strong>2011</strong>, on time<br />
and on budget. It has won a series of<br />
awards, the most prestigious being Best<br />
Science, Technical, Industrial Museum -<br />
European Museum Academy, Micheletti<br />
Award 20<strong>12</strong>.<br />
• The Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls<br />
project at Kelvingrove Park was completed<br />
in September <strong>2011</strong>. The new greens will host<br />
the bowling tournament during games time<br />
in 2014.<br />
• The Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris<br />
Hoy Velodrome (previously NISA), Scotland’s<br />
first indoor velodrome, began on site in<br />
January 2010. During <strong>2011</strong>/<strong>12</strong>, the<br />
internal fit out of the building was<br />
undertaken. The building was handed over<br />
by the main contractor in May 20<strong>12</strong> and will<br />
open to the public in Autumn 20<strong>12</strong>.<br />
• Work on Tollcross International Swimming<br />
Centre commenced in October <strong>2011</strong> with<br />
the pool finally closing to the public in<br />
January 20<strong>12</strong>. Under this contract a new<br />
training pool will be constructed and the<br />
existing facility refurbished. The works also<br />
included the construction of a new public<br />
hall to replace Shettleston Halls which were<br />
destroyed by fire in 2008.<br />
• <strong>Glasgow</strong> Club Whitehill adaptations were<br />
conducted in January / February 20<strong>12</strong>,<br />
including:- the refurbishment of the upper<br />
floor community wing to create an enhanced<br />
gym and multi-purpose community space,<br />
refresh of the changing areas to service<br />
community use of Whitehill School’s synthetic<br />
pitch, and refresh of the pool reception area.<br />
• As part of implementing the City’s Sports<br />
Pitch Strategy, the main project to be<br />
completed in <strong>2011</strong>/<strong>12</strong> was the completion<br />
of three grass pitches at Drumoyne Sports<br />
Campus. Works to create a grass cricket<br />
oval at Bellahouston Park have continued<br />
throughout <strong>2011</strong>, with completion expected<br />
at the end of June 20<strong>12</strong>.
