44 Glasgow Life Annual Review 2011/12 Capital Developments Glasgow Life’s continuing programme to improve a diverse range of cultural and sporting facilities within the City, delivered on a number of key projects during 2011/12. Glasgow Life works as project sponsor, coordinator and client on behalf of Glasgow City Council on all of the following developments. Many of the projects are key to the delivery of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and sustaining a strong legacy for years after. The 2011/12 highlights include: • The iconic Riverside Museum building was successfully opened in June 2011, on time and on budget. It has won a series of awards, the most prestigious being Best Science, Technical, Industrial Museum - European Museum Academy, Micheletti Award 2012. • The Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls project at Kelvingrove Park was completed in September 2011. The new greens will host the bowling tournament during games time in 2014. • The Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome (previously NISA), Scotland’s first indoor velodrome, began on site in January 2010. During 2011/12, the internal fit out of the building was undertaken. The building was handed over by the main contractor in May 2012 and will open to the public in Autumn 2012. • Work on Tollcross International Swimming Centre commenced in October 2011 with the pool finally closing to the public in January 2012. Under this contract a new training pool will be constructed and the existing facility refurbished. The works also included the construction of a new public hall to replace Shettleston Halls which were destroyed by fire in 2008. • Glasgow Club Whitehill adaptations were conducted in January / February 2012, including:- the refurbishment of the upper floor community wing to create an enhanced gym and multi-purpose community space, refresh of the changing areas to service community use of Whitehill School’s synthetic pitch, and refresh of the pool reception area. • As part of implementing the City’s Sports Pitch Strategy, the main project to be completed in 2011/12 was the completion of three grass pitches at Drumoyne Sports Campus. Works to create a grass cricket oval at Bellahouston Park have continued throughout 2011, with completion expected at the end of June 2012.
