blisters or ulcers may appear with repeated episodes.<br />

Treatment<br />

■ In the initial stages, gradually rewarm exposed area(s) at room<br />

temperature.<br />

■ If the face is involved, you may simply hold a warm hand to the area.<br />

■ If the hands are affected, place them in the armpits or crotch.<br />

■ If blisters form, gently cleanse the area and protect it to avoid<br />

infection.<br />

Prevention<br />

■ Avoid prolonged exposure to the elements.<br />

■ Protect the obvious exposed areas with adequate clothing and<br />

covering.<br />

Trench Foot/Immersion Foot. Trench foot and immersion foot are<br />

injuries caused by the prolonged exposure of skin to cold water or<br />

dampness at temperatures usually ranging from just above freezing to<br />

50°F. In the early stages, the feet and toes are cold, numb, and stiff, and<br />

walking becomes difficult. The feet smell, swell, and become painful.<br />

Treatment<br />

■ Gentle drying, elevation, and exposure to temperatures of 64° to<br />

72°F.<br />

■ Bed rest, cleanliness, and pain relief.<br />

Prevention<br />

■ Change to dry socks three times daily or as often as necessary.<br />

■ Use foot powder.<br />

■ Wear VB boots.<br />

■ If leather boots are worn, dry them whenever possible.<br />

Hypothermia. Simply stated, hypothermia is a lowering of the temperature<br />

of the body’s inner core. This happens when the body loses heat<br />

faster than it can produce it. The potential for this condition will be<br />
