Unoccupied Play<br />

• moves around randomly<br />

• makes random movements with no clear purpose<br />

Solitary Play<br />

Child shows no interest in <strong>play</strong> with /alongside others near her:<br />

• <strong>play</strong>s by herself<br />

• <strong>play</strong>s with different toys to the other children<br />

• totally focused on her own <strong>play</strong><br />

• no interest in joining or interfering with the <strong>play</strong> of others<br />

Onlooker Play<br />

Child may sit or stand near others:<br />

• observes their <strong>play</strong><br />

• might ask questions or talk to the children<br />

• doesn’t join in the <strong>play</strong><br />

Parallel Play<br />

Child begins to <strong>play</strong> her own game near to other children:<br />

• <strong>play</strong>s with similar or identical toys used by other<br />

children nearby<br />

• shows interest in what others are doing<br />

• leaves or joins the group as she pleases
