Issued: September 30, 2008 The data in Figure 38 represents a free burn of the UL 711, 6A wood crib employed in this portion of the investigation. The heptane burns out a little after two minutes as can be seen by the leveling out of the heat release rate curve at this point. It is interesting to note the duration of the free burn test, prior to the crib degrading structurally. This eventually led to the crib’s collapse after about 15 minutes. Issued: September 30, 2008 11.4 Water Only Application Testing Using the general methodology of section 11.1, a water only application until the point of 25 percent of the heat release rate at time of application was conducted. The heat release rate regrowth was considered to be too quick after removing the nozzle. A second test was conducted, this time terminating the attack at 10 percent of the heat release rate at time of water application. In this test, the wood crib was suppressed to the point where minimal regrowth occurred. A third test was conducted, averaging the test termination points from tests 1 and 2. This time, the attack termination occurred at 17 percent. The regrowth of the still burning wood crib was thought to be slow and acceptable for further comparison testing. This test was conducted two additional times with water only for repeatability sake. The convective heat release rate versus time data is presented in Figure 39. The control point of 17 percent of the initial heat release rate at time of attack was chosen for the remainder of the test series with agent application.
