A formal request for assistance was made to USAID by the Department of<br />

Social Welfare in a letter dateci January 3, 1969, in connectf-n with the<br />

homeless victims In the three S m provinces. In addition to food, USAID<br />

was asked if it could assist by nrocuriqg nipa roofing for the reconstruction<br />

of the homes that had been totally and partially destrc~yed.<br />

The Ambassador declared the Samar area elip3t.le to receive disaster f'unds<br />

and authorized the release of 40,~00 pesos chargeable to AID continrenc~<br />

fund for emergency repair and recofistruction of the homes of' the 5,442<br />

families left homeless on this island equivalent of . . . . . . . . $10 256<br />

The Department of Social Welfare thanked the USG for past and new responses<br />

to its requests for aid.<br />
