Ylssion Board of New York, CRS recmited eight registered nurses to serve<br />

on mobile medical and relief teams under the auspices of ICRC and the<br />

Nigerian Red Wss in stricken areas under Federal contro:L.<br />

CRS has been providins large quantities of relief supplies to'both sides on<br />

a continuing basis and has been cantributirg both supplie:; and cash for<br />

expenses toward airlifts from the United States, Europe and Sao Tome. The<br />

airlift f'mm Sao Tbme direct to Biafra was organized by Ccwitas International<br />

in February of 1968 with the first flight being mde in March of 1968. CRS<br />

was among the church relief agencies who helped organize tihe operation.<br />

Later the Caritas flights were joined with the Nord~hurch~aiairlift to<br />

form the International Joint Church Aid and CRS continued with its support<br />

of the combined airlifts from Sao Tome.<br />

CRS is a member of Joint Church Aid/USA which owned the original four G97G<br />

planes purchased from the U. S. Government and used in the Sao Tome airlift.<br />

From January, 1968, through June, 1969, CRS arranged for shipment of<br />

10,504 tons of supplies to Riafra and 30,667 tons to Nigerla, of which<br />

38,586 tons came fran the U. S. Government food donation program under<br />

Title 11 of Public Law 480, for which dollar value is given in the USG<br />
