6. The island ec<strong>on</strong>omy is revolving around coc<strong>on</strong>ut cultivati<strong>on</strong>, fishing and tourism. Substantial subsidy is given<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> India to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands in all spheres and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dominant sector in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

islands for almost all ec<strong>on</strong>omic activities. Private entrepreneurship is very much limited in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands.<br />

Bangaram island has been developed as a tourist resort. The UTL administrati<strong>on</strong> has proposed to open more<br />

islands for tourists.<br />

7. Agriculture is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mainstay <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ec<strong>on</strong>omy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lakshadweep. More than 90% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> depends<br />

up<strong>on</strong> agriculture. It is a Coc<strong>on</strong>ut M<strong>on</strong>o Crop Territory. The entire island has become an Organic Farming<br />

Regi<strong>on</strong> as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islanders use bio-fertilisers, organic manure and micro nutrients <strong>on</strong>ly. Chemical fertilizers are not<br />

allowed to be used. Fisheries is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d most important ec<strong>on</strong>omic activity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> Territory. The<br />

estimated potential resources <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sea around Lakshadweep is about 1 lakh t<strong>on</strong>nes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tuna and equal<br />

quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> shark. In 2006, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tuna catch was 11751 t<strong>on</strong>nes The present tuna catch is estimated to be just<br />

10% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> available potential.<br />

8. The UTL has been declared as a “No Industry District” <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country in view <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fragile ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

islands. An Industries Department, however, exists in Lakshadweep which aims to develop small industries<br />

and entrepreneurship am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local populati<strong>on</strong>. Industries which do not require much land, large quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

water, power and which do not pollute <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lago<strong>on</strong>s and soil, can <strong>on</strong>ly be c<strong>on</strong>sidered in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se tiny islands.<br />

The entire <str<strong>on</strong>g>group</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands is c<strong>on</strong>sidered as <strong>on</strong>e district for Lead Bank purposes. Syndicate Bank is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Lead Bank and C<strong>on</strong>venor <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> Territory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lakshadweep Bankers Committee (UTLBC). Presently<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are 10 bank branches in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands viz. nine branches <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Syndicate Bank and <strong>on</strong>e branch <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> State Bank<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> India (SBI). SBI opened its first branch in April 2005 at Kavaratti. The branch <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Syndicate Bank as well as<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> and SBI at Kavaratti are Core Banking Branches with ATM facilities. Syndicate Bank had opened its first<br />

branch at Kavaratti in 1971 and is operating throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UTL with nine branches in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nine major islands.
