possible due to lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> infrastructure. The charcoal fed copra drier was introduced but was not very successful.<br />

(h) Cold storages are not available at both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ends (islands and main land).<br />

(i) Exorbitant cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport to reach <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> market (main land)<br />

(j) Although value additi<strong>on</strong> is suggested to <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fset <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> high cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport and increase pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>it to coc<strong>on</strong>ut<br />

farmers, lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> infrastructure acts as a deterrent.<br />

(k) Lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> facilities/know how for safe disposal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> coc<strong>on</strong>ut pith poses a problem in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> island.<br />

Government Initiatives in Development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Agriculture<br />

4.9 As per <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plan document <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> UTL, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mandates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Agriculture Department are promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic<br />

farming, productivity enhancement, processing and product diversificati<strong>on</strong>, market development and capacity<br />

building & technology upgradati<strong>on</strong>. To achieve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se objectives, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Government proposed to launch schemes<br />

for coc<strong>on</strong>ut development, promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic farming, livelihood support <strong>services</strong>, horticulture development<br />

programme, natural resources management, integrated pest management, human resource management,<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> technology, etc. with a total outlay <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rs.55.40 crore during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> XI Five Year Plan period (2007-12).<br />
