Bait Fish fishery<br />

5.4 The Pole & Line fishing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Skipjack Tuna depends <strong>on</strong> baitfish fishery from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lago<strong>on</strong>s. The bait fishes<br />

collected from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lago<strong>on</strong>s are stored in a bait tank <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> size 1.6 X 0.8 m, in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> engine room <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each boat,<br />

with facility for water circulati<strong>on</strong>. On reaching <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tuna fishing site, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bait-fishes are thrown at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tuna<br />

shoals to keep <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m aggregated near <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boat. Sustainable live bait fishery from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lago<strong>on</strong>s, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore very<br />

essential to sustain <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pole & Line fishery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Skipjack Tuna. At present, about 21 species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bait fishes are<br />

harvested from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lago<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Fish Aggregating Devices<br />

5.5 Establishment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) is a proven way to enhance <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quantum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fishing<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> oceanic waters. Recently, with technical collaborati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NIOT, Chennai, <strong>on</strong>e Fish Aggregating Device<br />

(FAD) each was established in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> major fishing ground <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all islands.<br />

It is expected that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re will be an<br />

increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish landings to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tune <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 25-30% over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next 2 - 3 years due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> positive impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

FADs.<br />

Fish Processing and Marketing<br />

5.6 At present, almost 95% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tuna landings are processed and marketed as Masmin, a cooked,<br />

smoked and dried delicacy developed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> UTL.<br />

The processing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tuna in to Masmin is undertaken by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fishermen <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves. Each Tuna is cut<br />

into four fillet like pieces without b<strong>on</strong>es. These pieces are boiled in a sea water - fresh water mixture for about<br />

6-7 hours. The cooked pieces are smoked <strong>on</strong> indigenous kilns for 2 days. The cooked and smoked pieces are<br />

sun dried for 8-10 days until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y acquire hard, wood like c<strong>on</strong>sistency. The Masmin are packed in plastic bags<br />

and sent to mainland via Kozhikode port. It is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n exported mainly to Sri Lanka through Tuticorin port.<br />

At present, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Masmin trade fetches almost 95% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total income to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fishermen. For producing 1<br />

kg. <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Masmin, 5 Kgs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole fish is required and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fishermen get Rs. 110/Kg <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Masmin. In o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r words<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y get about Rs.20/- per kg <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Skipjack Tuna without c<strong>on</strong>sidering <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir labour for processing.<br />

Fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, Fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> masmin trade is through a traditi<strong>on</strong>al channel involving 3-5 middlemen and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fishermen<br />

get <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> payment <strong>on</strong>ly after 3-4 m<strong>on</strong>ths. The commodity is also subject to frequent price fluctuati<strong>on</strong>s. The<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship between Skipjack landings and export <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> masmin is illustrated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> table below:-
