FRENCH IMMERSION AND INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES French for the Future Conference The French for the Future Conference for Grade 12 French Immersion and French as a Second Language students will be held in April. Students should stay tuned for announcements made in class and on LTV for further details. This conference is free and is a terrific day for students of the French Language. All kinds of workshops are offered as well as lunch. French for the Future Conferences are held consecutively in all the major Canadian cities. It’s a great way to celebrate your knowledge of the French language with students from the CBE and the Catholic School Board. This conference is sponsored by Canadian Parents for French. Staff Changes Our new teacher, Mme Brigite Fournier, will be teaching grade 10 French Language Arts until the end of June. Mrs. Gwen Josty has moved to the USA and her Spanish classes have been taken by Mme Harmel. Art FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS We are at the start of another semester of Art at Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School. The classes are fully underway and have completed still life drawings, portraiture and figurative drawings depending on their course leverl. The Art 10 students are starting their clay projects and have perspective, metal work, painting and other projects ahead of them. The Art 20 students are working on an impressionist drawing in oil pastel and will soon be starting their clay and water colour units. They will also be making a ring and will create some expressionist prints along with sketchbook and other minor projects. The Art 30 students are working on a major painting project right now, where they are picking an influential painter from history and are attempting to create a new painting in that painters style. They have already completed one of their 3 independent projects and will be printmaking and then creating a metal sculpture or piece of jewellery in their metal unit. There are also a variety of sketchbook, research and other small projects to finish. The Advanced Placement students, who have opted to complete their portfolio for submission, are into their final weeks of preparation time. April 14-18 are the final dates for photography with one more photography date available for absolute last minute photos. The students who are completing their portfolios and have paid the exam fee must also see Mr. McRae about the photography fee that must be paid prior to sending in their portfolios. The students need to meet with Mr. McRae at least once a week leading up to the final photo shoots and are advised to take photographs as soon as works are completed. The photography station is available whenever Mr. McRae is teaching in periods 1-3 and also Tuesday and Thursday at lunch or after school. Advanced Placement students must also book time with Mr. McRae on May 5 th , 6 th , 7 th or 8 th , after school, to put their portfolios together. An appointment will also be scheduled on May 9 th for final submission.
This looks to be a fantastic semester, so don’t forget about the Hallway Art Show May 26 th until June 6 th . See you there, R. McRae and C. Hendry, Art Teachers Drama Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of THE MOUSE THAT ROARED Mr. Jack and his students did a wonderful job for this year’s Fall production! Student actors and technicians worked hard, and had fun, putting on this full-length comedy. Music Our Music Program performs throughout the year at different venues and events. This year the choir, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles, and concert bands have attended a music festival and performed for us in the theatre and at the Rosza Centre. Thanks for producing such beautiful music! This semester is the music program’s busiest time of the year, and the hard work, skill, talent, and dedication of the students comes together for final performances. EVENTS CALENDAR As published in the Student Handbook, newsletters may be found on our web site. We would encourage you to familiarize yourself with our web site where you will find many important issues and calendars. A limited number of copies of the newsletter are available in the main office. WINDS FROM THE SOUTH CONCERT – The annual Winds from the South Concert was held at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Monday, March 3 rd . This year, the Scarlett Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Chamber Choir shared the stage with Nickle, Robert Warren, Fairview, Woodman, and John Ware Junior High School. The evening provided an opportunity for students to play in a world class concert hall in addition to providing future Scarlett Lancers a chance to see what Scarlett Music has to offer. Hats off to all involved on a job well done! 2008 ALBERTA INTERNATIONAL BAND FESTIVAL (took place at both the University of Calgary and Mount Royal College. Great results Grade 10 Concert Band – Fabulous performance – no word yet. Grade 11/12 Symphonic Winds – Superior/Excellent performance. Wind Ensemble – Superior, Gold Award Jazz 1 - Superior, Gold Award Jazz II – Superior, Gold Award Jazz III – Excellent Jazz Combo – Superior, Gold Award and Most Outstanding Jazz Combo Award MOONLIGHT KNIGHTS – Friday, April 18 th at 6:00 pm in Scarlett’s Main Gym. This is a dinner, dancing, and silent auction event for the family! Tickets will be sold in advance. YEAR END CONCERT – Wednesday, May 21 st at 7:00 - 9:00 pm at University of Calgary Theatre.
