installation
Something installed, such as machinery, an apparatus, a device, a system, or a piece of equipment
placed in position or connected for use. A stationary technical unit part of a facility where one or more
activities are carried out, and any other directly associated activities which have a technical connection to
the activities carried out on that site, and which could have an effect on emissions and pollution.
May be a technical unit within an establishment in which dangerous substances are produced, used,
handled or stored.
EXAMPLE Within an oil refinery, different installations are represented by storage areas, cracking units,
reforming units, and other units handling the various phases of the refining process.
installation part
Specific technical part of the installation which is developing a representative functionality that should be
registered under the legislation.
EXAMPLE Chimney, tank, reactor.
operator
A person or company that runs a business or enterprise and which is legally responsible of the facility.
This means any natural or legal person who operates to manage and control the facility or, where this is
provided by the national legislation, to whom decisive economic power over the technical functioning of
the facility has been delegated.
plot
A piece of land part of a facility destined to functional purposes. A potential sub-division of a major site as
delimited extension of land in which are performed extensive operations related with the activity or one of
the activities performed by a facility.
production and industrial building
Artificial construction, part of the production facility that are useful to host or provide shelter to activity
development. Inside a facility, and in relation with the definition of building, this entity should represent a
construction under responsibility of the facility, either as an independent unit or as a functional
infrastructure for an installation.
production and industrial facility
Something designed, built, installed to serve a specific function with production purposes, comprehending
the complete equipment or apparatus for a particular process or operation.

The geographical location of the production facility or, otherwise, a piece of land where the facility was, is,
or is intended to be located.

The geographical location of the facility or else a piece of land where the facility was, is, or is intended to
be located. Location with defined geographical boundaries and on which activities under the control of an
organization may be carried out. The geographical boundaries may be on land and in water, and include
above- and below-surface structures, both natural and man-made.

The common "abstract level" for production infrastructures: facilities, installations, installation parts. It may
