GENDER OF INFORMAL CARERS<br />
During <strong>2006</strong>–<strong>2007</strong>, of the 11,873 informal carers providing care to service users,<br />
10,520 (89 per cent) were female and 1,236 (10 per cent) were male. No gender<br />
was specified for 117 carers.<br />
RELATIONSHIP OF INFORMAL CARERS TO SERVICE USERS<br />
The profile of the relationship of the main informal carer to the service user suggests<br />
that:<br />
79 per cent of care is provided by mothers;<br />
five per cent of care is provided by fathers;<br />
six per cent of care is provided by partners; and<br />
eight per cent of care is provided by other relatives or friends and neighbours.<br />
