Overall, a very mild procedure for benzylation of aldehydes was developed using<br />

Mg/CuCl 2 .2H 2 O as the active metal mediators. Its novelty was due to exploitation of the<br />

spontaneous bimetal redox reaction in an environmentally benign wet medium. In addition,<br />

its inexpensiveness, practical viability and good success with different kinds of aldehyde<br />

substrates contributed significantly together to its overall efficacy. In this context, it is<br />

worth mentioning that some of the reported procedures for benzylation of aldehydes have a<br />

few limitations due to varied reasons viz use of toxic CdCl 2 , expensive Ag catalyst,<br />

anhydrous conditions etc. Hence this method proved out to be more efficient and<br />

environmentally benign compared to other procedures.<br />
