SECTION 27: PHYSICIAL FACILITIES, PHARMACY<br />

The size and type of services to be provided in the pharmacy can largely depend upon<br />
the type of medication distribution system used, number of patients to be served, and<br />
extent of shared or purchased services. This shall be described in the narrative<br />
functional program. The pharmacy room or suite shall be located for convenient access,<br />
staff control, and security. Facilities and equipment shall be as necessary to<br />
accommodate the functions of the program. See Section 22(D) Pharmacy for additional<br />
requirements. As a minimum, the following elements shall be included:<br />
A. Dispensing.<br />
1 A pickup and receiving area.<br />
2. An area for reviewing and recording.<br />
3. An extemporaneous compounding area that includes a sink and sufficient<br />
counter space for medication preparation.<br />
4. Work counters and space for automated and manual dispensing activities.<br />
5. An area for temporary storage, exchange, and restocking of carts.<br />
6. Security provisions for medications and personnel in the dispensing<br />
counter area.<br />
B. Manufacturing.<br />
1. A bulk compounding area.<br />
2. Provisions for packaging and labeling.<br />
3. A quality control area.<br />
C. Storage (may be cabinets, shelves, and/or separate rooms or closets).<br />
1. Bulk storage.<br />
2. Active storage.<br />
3. Refrigerated storage.<br />
