6 Inter-temporal Variation in Revealed Comparative Adv<strong>an</strong>tage: 2000-2003<br />

6.1 India<br />

The number of sectors <strong>for</strong> which India enjoys comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage remains<br />

roughly the same between 2000 <strong>an</strong>d 2003. In 2000 India enjoyed comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage<br />

in 42 sectors <strong>an</strong>d in the year 2003 in 41 sectors. While 36 out of the 42 sectors retain their<br />

comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage in 2003, 6 sectors lose their adv<strong>an</strong>tage. Five new sectors<br />

indicative of comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>for</strong> India emerge in 2003. Prominent among these is<br />

sector HS-97 i.e works of art, collector’s pieces <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>tiques, with a r<strong>an</strong>k of eight. Two<br />

sectors each, have lost or gained more th<strong>an</strong> ten r<strong>an</strong>ks over this period.<br />

Of the ten most competitive sectors <strong>for</strong> India in 2000, eight retain their adv<strong>an</strong>tage<br />

in 2003. While sectors like articles of leather, <strong>an</strong>imal gut, harness, travel goods <strong>an</strong>d<br />

vegetable plaiting materials, vegetable products nes drop out of the top ten set, sectors<br />

like works of art, collectors pieces <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>tiques <strong>an</strong>d ores, slag <strong>an</strong>d ash make <strong>an</strong> entry as<br />

India’s most competitive sectors in 2003. Sectors that have experienced a loss of 10 or<br />
