Footwear (SITC-85): India <strong>an</strong>d China complement each other in commodities<br />

like uppers <strong>an</strong>d parts thereof, other th<strong>an</strong> stiffeners, waterproof footwear, outer sole/upper<br />

of rubber/plastic, coverg knee, nes <strong>an</strong>d footweal, outr sole/uppr of leather, strap across<br />

the instep/arnd big toe in 2000. In 2003, footwear, outr sole/ uppr of leathr, strap across<br />

the instep/ arnd big toe is the only commodity where both India <strong>an</strong>d China continue to<br />

complement each other.<br />

8 Main Findings <strong>an</strong>d Conclusions<br />

In this paper revealed comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage has been <strong>an</strong>alyzed at both the two<br />

<strong>an</strong>d six digit level of HS classification <strong>for</strong> both India <strong>an</strong>d China. Our <strong>an</strong>alysis reveals that<br />

the pattern of comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage varies at different levels of commodity disaggregation.<br />

Sectors that r<strong>an</strong>k among the top ten according to the value of the index of<br />

RCA are not necessarily able to retain their position when r<strong>an</strong>ked according to<br />

comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage at the 6 digit constituent commodity level. In the case of India,<br />

other th<strong>an</strong> cotton, no other sector that r<strong>an</strong>ks among the top ten according to the value of<br />

the RCAI retains its comparative r<strong>an</strong>king at the dis-aggregated level. For China, other<br />

made textiles, sets, worn clothing is so positioned. Simult<strong>an</strong>eously, there are also some<br />

sectors where either of the countries may be disadv<strong>an</strong>tageously placed at the aggregate<br />

level but may enjoy comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage at the constituent commodity level.<br />

A the six digit level of classification, the commodities that r<strong>an</strong>k among the top<br />

100 according to the index of RCA while being dispersed across various sectors, are<br />

largely drawn from sectors like org<strong>an</strong>ic chemicals, cotton, salt, sulphur, earth, stone,<br />
