In the UNCTAD IV – category of commodities with high dem<strong>an</strong>d <strong>for</strong> skill, scale,<br />

capital <strong>an</strong>d technology, the picture <strong>for</strong> China is broadly similar to that <strong>for</strong> India, but <strong>for</strong><br />

sector- telecommunications <strong>an</strong>d sound recording <strong>an</strong>d reproducing apparatus <strong>an</strong>d<br />

equipment, where India enjoys comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>for</strong> only two commodities in<br />

contrast with 30 <strong>for</strong> China.<br />

Three Digit Level<br />

At the three digit level India reports growth in all categories of m<strong>an</strong>ufactures<br />

according to the ETA classification. China however witnesses <strong>an</strong> increase in the number<br />

of commodities only <strong>for</strong> the technology intensive category <strong>an</strong>d a fall in the ULI category.<br />

In 2003 India attains the same level as that of China in natural resource intensive<br />

categories from 2000 to 2003. India has 95 (74 in 2000) commodities in the natural<br />

resource category in comparison to 94 commodities <strong>for</strong> China. In hum<strong>an</strong> capital category,<br />

India has signific<strong>an</strong>tly narrowed the difference with China in terms of the number of<br />

commodities <strong>for</strong> which it enjoys comparative adv<strong>an</strong>tage in the world market.<br />
