The managed test facilities include three sites for sea trials, where devices may be tested but not gridconnected.<br />
These are the European Marine <strong>Energy</strong> Centre (EMEC) Fall of Warness site; the EMEC Shapinsay<br />
Sound site (Orkney); and Fabtest, a facility operated by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners in Falmouth Bay<br />
(Cornwall). The other four sites are either already grid-connected or planned to be connected and include<br />
the EMEC Billia Croo and Scapa Flow test areas (Orkney); Wave Hub near Hayle (Cornwall); and the Solent<br />
<strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> Centre (SOEC) off the Isle of Wight. EMEC has been operational since 2004 and seen a<br />
number of technologies deployed at its sites, including, for instance, the Pelamis Wave Power wave energy<br />
converter, two of which were deployed during <strong>2012</strong> 9 . Wave Hub was installed during 2010 and Fabtest<br />
opened in <strong>2012</strong>. The SOEC is currently under development.<br />
