Human Resources – The important element to the success of hydrography<br />
World Hydrography Day in <strong>2011</strong> was also the 90th anniversary of the<br />
establishment of the <strong>IHO</strong>. The theme - Human Resources – The<br />
important element to the success of hydrography focused on the<br />
importance of people in hydrography. The Prime Minister, Ministers,<br />
Diplomats and other local dignitaries were invited to a reception<br />
hosted by the IHB in Monaco. Articles in newspapers and magazines,<br />
visits of students and a small exhibition were also organized by the<br />
Bureau. A Media Release was prepared and made available on the<br />
<strong>IHO</strong> web site together with various other materials for use by<br />
Member States in their own celebrations.<br />

VISIT BY STUDENTS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL<br />
ON THE LAW OF THE SEA (ITLOS)<br />

A course leader and six students attending a nine-month course, funded by the Nippon Foundation, at the<br />
International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany, visited the IHB on 21<br />
February. They were given a briefing on “Hydrography and UNCLOS” followed by a Question and<br />
Answer Session. The visit was part of the International Liaison section of their course. In addition to the<br />
IHB they visited the IMO in London, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and the<br />
European Union (EU) in Brussels.<br />
The course leader was from Germany and the students were from: Argentina, Brazil, Greece,<br />
Mozambique, South Africa and Togo.<br />
