charting and is mainly tasked to develop and maintain the <strong>IHO</strong> Chart Specifications, as contained in<br />

publication S-4. The 26 attendees included representatives from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark,<br />

Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea (Rep. of), Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain,<br />

Sweden, UK, USA and IHB, plus expert contributors from ESRI and Jeppesen. The meeting was chaired<br />

by Dr. Peter JONES (UK).<br />

The meeting reviewed and discussed a number of proposals relating to chart content and specifications,<br />

that included the following topics for which new or amended specifications would be prepared as part of<br />

the next work programme:<br />

- depiction of marine farm areas;<br />

- maintained / dredged areas;<br />

- safe clearance heights;<br />

- depiction of limits of newly surveyed areas;<br />

- coloured light flares;<br />

- printing plans on back of charts;<br />

- and arc-pointers to aids to navigations.<br />

The meeting was told that the comprehensive revision of S-4 which started in 2004 was now in its last<br />

phase and should be completed in 2012 or 2013. An update on progress with the current revision of S-4 -<br />

Section B-300 Topography was provided and discussed. Similarly, an update was provided on the<br />

development of a US Combined Paper Chart and ECDIS Chart No.1, and a UK INT1-like publication that<br />

described S-52 (ECDIS) symbols. Finally, presentations were made by the expert contributors on projects<br />

relating to an “Ocean Basemap” (ESRI) and an “NHS Print-on-Demand Service” (Jeppesen).<br />

The Digital Information Portrayal Working Group (DIPWG) meeting was held jointly with the 22 nd<br />

TSMAD meeting and took place at the Sejong Hotel in Seoul, Korea (Rep. of), from 11 to 15 April. (See<br />

<strong>report</strong> on TSMAD – Element 2.11)<br />
