The 8 th meeting of the Southern African and Islands Hydrographic Commission (SAIHC) took place in<br />
Walvis Bay, Namibia on 6 and 7 September, under the Chairmanship of Captain Abri KAMPFER, the<br />
Hydrographer of South Africa. 21 delegates participated as full or associate members and observers from<br />
the following countries: Angola, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Norway,<br />
Portugal, South Africa, UK and the USA. The following <strong>international</strong> <strong>organization</strong>s were also<br />
represented: IALA, West Indian Ocean Marine Highway Project (WIOMHP) and the IMO. The Maritime<br />
Safety Administration of South Africa and representatives from Jeppesen, Underwater Surveys and C&C<br />
Technologies participated as observers. Vice Admiral Maratos represented the IHB.<br />
Vice Admiral Maratos made a brief presentation of some of the important issues that the Organization has<br />
undertaken during the intersessional period, explaining the preparations for the IHC that was to take place<br />
in April 2012. The Commission examined various issues of interest to the region, referring to the progress<br />
of production of ENCs and INT charts, the promulgation of MSI, the status of <strong>hydrographic</strong> surveying,<br />
the need to update C-55, procedures to be followed in response to marine disasters, Capacity Building and<br />
the status and needs for the development of Hydrographic Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI). The<br />
Commission decided to have meetings <strong>annual</strong>ly rather than every two years as had been the case, in order<br />
to better follow the various developments occurring at both the national and <strong>international</strong> level.<br />
Presentations were provided by the representatives of IALA and the WIOMHP.<br />
Captain KAMPFER was re-elected as Chairman.<br />
