Parts of Speech<br />

• We will go through Carnie’s book “<strong>Syntax</strong>” chapter by<br />

chaper.<br />

• We start with analyzing the units that sentences are built<br />

upon: words. (Chapter 2)<br />

• Famous example (Groucho Marx):<br />

Time flies like an arrow.<br />

Fruit flies like a banana.<br />

(first flies is a verb, second flies is a noun. First like is a<br />

comparative conjunction, second like is a verb. )<br />
