The School of Veterinary Medicine<br />
seeks students who exhibit strong<br />
academic potential; and students<br />
who are compassionate, competent,<br />
flexible, motivated, perceptive, and<br />
empathetic. <strong>St</strong>udents must be aware<br />
of the realities of veterinary medical<br />
practice in the 21st century and be<br />
familiar with the ethical questions<br />
they will face on a daily basis. They<br />
must have a sense of community<br />
responsibility, and some interest in<br />
and exposure to knowledge creation.<br />
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program Admission<br />
Requirements for Direct Entry<br />
Applicants from the north American Model of<br />
education<br />
A successful candidate will have documented time spent in veterinary<br />
medical practice, preferably with large and small animal species. While<br />
we do not require a minimum number of hours, it is in the student’s<br />
best interest to gain as much exposure as possible. This demonstrates<br />
a level of commitment that will act to enhance the application.<br />
Experience in other areas of veterinary medicine are also acceptable,<br />
such as research and regulatory work.<br />
1. Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited<br />
university. Under exceptional circumstances, a candidate may be<br />
considered with a minimum of 60 undergraduate credit hours.<br />
2. The following specific undergraduate coursework (or its equivalent)<br />
is required as part of the preveterinary medical requirements for<br />
admission:<br />
• General biology or zoology with laboratory: one year<br />
• General chemistry with laboratory: one year<br />
• Organic chemistry with laboratory: one semester<br />
• Genetics: one semester<br />
• Biochemistry: one semester<br />
• Physics with laboratory: one semester<br />
• Mathematics (calculus, computer science, or statistics):<br />
one semester<br />
• English: one semester<br />
3. <strong>St</strong>andardized Examination: Candidates must submit scores on the<br />
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or alternatively, the MCAT. (Our<br />
GRE code is 7153; our MCAT code is 21303.)<br />
Applicants from the British System<br />
of Education<br />
1. Applicants with strong passes at the Advanced Level of the General<br />
Certificate of Education in biology (zoology), chemistry, and either<br />
physics or mathematics will be assessed individually and will be<br />
accepted into the five-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.<br />
2. A bachelor’s degree with a strong science background is required<br />
for direct entry into the four-year veterinary medical program.<br />
