the Committee on Admission consider the application, the<br />
candidate will be notified of the procedures for application.<br />
Selection Factors<br />
The Committee on Admission takes seriously its charge of<br />
choosing future veterinarians who will contribute positively<br />
to the world’s community of veterinary medicine. The<br />
selection of students is made after careful consideration of<br />
many aspects: academic ability; emotional and professional<br />
maturity; academic achievement; community service;<br />
indicators of responsibility and motivation; time in a<br />
veterinary medical practice or farm experience; and letters<br />
of recommendation regarding the applicant’s personal<br />
qualities, character, motivation, and academic abilities.<br />
Candidates for admission will be invited for an interview.<br />
Admission Process<br />
The Office of Admission will acknowledge receipt of a<br />
candidate’s application within two weeks of its arrival. A<br />
candidate will be informed of any required supporting<br />
documents missing at that time. Within one month after<br />
receipt of all application materials, a candidate will receive<br />
notice that the application is complete and being reviewed<br />
to determine whether an interview will be granted.<br />
The Office of Admission encourages candidates who have<br />
been approved for an interview to request interviews<br />
in Grenada, and will schedule one upon the applicant’s<br />
request. The <strong>University</strong> recognizes that financial<br />
considerations may prevent many candidates who reside<br />
at great distances from Grenada from choosing this option.<br />
Interviews, therefore, may be conducted in the United<br />
<strong>St</strong>ates, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Caribbean, or<br />
other locations that best serve the diverse applicant pool.<br />
Candidates are advised that being granted an interview<br />
is no guarantee of acceptance; the interview itself plays<br />
a significant part in the decision by the Committee on<br />
Admission. Applicants are notified of the decision of the<br />
Committee on Admission. A record of the notification is<br />
kept for one year.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents’ acceptance into the School of Veterinary<br />
Medicine is granted upon the presumption by the<br />
Committee on Admission that: (1) all courses currently<br />
being taken by applicants will be completed prior to<br />
registration and, (2) all statements made by applicants<br />
during the admission process, whether oral, written, or<br />
in submission of academic documentation, are true<br />
and correct. If it is subsequently discovered that false<br />
or inaccurate information was submitted, the <strong>University</strong><br />
may nullify a candidate’s acceptance or, if the student is<br />
registered, dismiss the student.<br />
A complete health history report must be submitted<br />
prior to registration. <strong>St</strong>udents must submit a signed<br />
acknowledgment of admission along with a nonrefundable<br />
tuition deposit to reserve a seat in the class.<br />
The Orientation Process<br />
The Office of Admission and the administration as a whole<br />
consider a realistic assessment of the veterinary medical<br />
program and the student experience in Grenada, the<br />
United <strong>St</strong>ates, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and<br />
Australia a necessary component of a responsible decision<br />
to attend <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong> School of Veterinary<br />
Medicine. Therefore, accepted and prospective candidates<br />
are invited to visit the campus in Grenada during the<br />
academic year, if possible. Accepted candidates who are<br />
unable to do so are encouraged to attend one of the<br />
Welcome Sessions for entering students that are held<br />
before registration, usually in New York City, Los Angeles,<br />
Toronto, and Trinidad and Tobago.<br />
The Dean of Enrolment Planning, faculty and staff members,<br />
graduates, students, and others will attend the Welcome<br />
Sessions in order to guide prospective students in making<br />
their decisions and preparing for veterinary medical school.<br />
As part of welcoming all new students, there is an extensive<br />
mandatory academic orientation program on campus<br />
commencing five days prior to the start of classes. For<br />
students arriving by air, this includes reception and<br />
transportation to the campus from the airport. Entering<br />
students are required to attend all academic sessions as<br />
well as the seminar on safety, campus rules, Grenadian law,<br />
off-campus housing, busing, and disaster preparedness.<br />
All students are encouraged to participate in walking tours<br />
of the campus and to familiarize themselves with the many<br />
recreational opportunities on campus and in Grenada.<br />
