there is a White Maximus. With
aromas of orange blossom and
honeysuckle, it displays incredible
notes of mandarin orange,
key lime and white peaches.
There is also the Bennett Lane
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
It is a seductive, inky, deep dark
ruby in color, with aromas of
cocoa, black cherry, deep dark
roses and ripe purple plums. On
the palate there are rich flavors of
jammy cherries and black raspberries
that lead into an elegant
finish with layers of rich texture
and incredible length. To finish
off the roster is their dessert wine,
made in very limited quantities
(just a hundred cases of 375 ml
bottles) from Cabernet, Petite
Sirah and Old Vine Carignane
grapes. Just imagine chocolate
covered cherries!
You can sample many of these
wines in their stylish but casual
tasting room. A combination of
Country French and California,
with doors leading to that patio
and lawn, it is the perfect spot to
sample Bennett Lane wines for
the first time, or to mingle with
people who have been coming to
the winery since the first day.
Since those earliest days, the
plantings outside have matured,
the roster of wines has grown,
but that essential mission, to
make the best wines possible,
and in their own style, has
endured.
You don’t want to miss the
winery’s entrance so watch carefully
when you head north out of
Calistoga. At 3340 Highway 128,
it will be on the right side a few
miles after you leave town. The
tasting room is open daily from
10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. by appointment.
