Three New Wines to Help Fight Pediatric Cancer
by Les Mahler
In early summer 2010, Watts Winery will be introducing three
new butterfly label wines. The three new releases, which are part of
Watts Winery’s effort to fight pediatric cancer, follow the April 2009
release of the butterfly label.
“These labels have all been designed and
the idea now is to expand the label,” said
Craig Watts, owner of Watts Winery in
Lockeford. For every bottle sold, 30
percent of after-profit sales will go directly
to childhood cancer research at UC Davis
and Sutter Memorial Hospital, Sacramento.
For Watts, the butterfly label release isn’t
just a charity drive; it’s more of a personal
fight. In 2008, Sheri and Craig Watt’s
second son, Kyle, was diagnosed with
Burkitt’s lymphoma.
Kyle had to undergo surgery, weeks of
chemotherapy, and later, months of testing. For now, the now 12-yearold
boy is doing fine and he’s behaving like a normal boy, Craig Watts
said. But oncologists at UC Davis said Kyle isn’t out of the woods just
yet; that will take place after five years of being cancer free.
The nightmare that Kyle and the family went through triggered the
need to find a cure for pediatric cancer, Watts said.
It was after Kyle finished his surgery that Craig Watts thought
about funding pediatric cancer research. And the only way he knew
he could take on such a formidable foe was through the family’s wine
business. So, in April 2009, after Kyle had finished his last
chemotherapy treatment, Watts Winery released the first two butterfly
label wines, a California Red Blend and a Chardonnay.
Why the butterfly? Because the butterfly is the international
symbol for pediatric cancer, Watts said. “It symbolizes hope,” he said.
