before or after school. Permits are not issued for lunch breaks<br />
unless a student’s diet is altered by a doctor.<br />
Attendance definitions<br />
A. Truancy - includes but is not limited to the following:<br />
1. being absent and neither the parents nor the school<br />
officials know of the student’s whereabouts<br />
2. absence is not condoned by the parents nor the school<br />
officials<br />
3. leaving campus, after once arriving without the prior<br />
consent of the parent and a permit to leave building<br />
4. leaving class without permission<br />
5. erroneous phone calls or written notes to have oneself<br />
dismissed from school or class<br />
6. “walk-outs” and/or “skip days”<br />
7. not being where one is supposed to be on campus<br />
8. other fraudulent absences or attempts to be absent<br />
from school not covered in this definition<br />
B. Suspensions - Not being in assigned classes due to having been<br />
denied attendance for a specified period as a result of<br />
unacceptable student behavior.<br />
III. Absences shall not exceed ten (10) for the semester<br />
A. A student that accumulates ten (10) absences in any block<br />
during the semester may not receive credit for that course.<br />
B. There will be no exempted absences unless the student is a<br />
senior and is taking a college day. In which case, the student<br />
must make arrangements through the counselor’s office for the<br />
college visit and must present proof of the visit from the college<br />
upon returning to school.<br />
C. The attendance office will make a conscientious effort to contact<br />
those parents who do not contact the school on each absence.<br />
D. <strong>Student</strong>s will be allowed to make up work and tests from<br />
excused absences. <strong>Student</strong>s will be given the number of days<br />
absent plus one to complete all make-up work.<br />
IV. A student may be given the opportunity to make up work if one of the<br />
following is a reason for the absence:<br />
A. illness of a student<br />
B. serious illness or emergency in the immediate family<br />
C. professional appointments which cannot be scheduled outside<br />
the school day<br />
D. funerals<br />
E. court appearances<br />
F. family trips with prior notification and approval<br />
G. other absences that have approval of the attendance committee.<br />
V. The following policy and procedures apply to all students:<br />
A. Parents will be notified after the fifth (5) absence.<br />
B. Parents will be notified after the eighth (8) absence.<br />
C. Following the ten (10) absence, parent(s) and the student will be<br />
required to meet with the Attendance Review Committee.<br />
